Israel has carried out a joint missile test with the US in the Mediterranean, amid heightened tension over possible Western military strikes on Syria.

The test came as the US Congress prepared for its first public hearing on a possible military response to alleged chemical weapons use by Syria.

Earlier, the UN confirmed that more than two million Syrians were now refugees from the 30-month conflict.

More Syrians were now displaced than any other nationality, it said.

INDORE: In a horrific incident, a young radiologist allegedly hanged himself to death after hacking to death his gynecologist wife and in-laws, besides strangulating his six-month-old daughter at a flat in New Palasia locality here on Sunday.

Estranged relations between the doctor couple Dr Rohit Dwivedi and Dr Priyanka (as indicated by a 13-page suicide note) is likely to have led to the gruesome murders at the fourth-floor rented flat of the multi-story Bakhatgarh Tower residential apartments.

According to SP (Indore East) OP Tripathi, the incident came to light at around 2.30 pm, after Rohit's father Dr GP Dwivedi, a professor with a private medical college in Bhopal, came to meet his son and daughter-in-law Priyanka. Dwivedi had come to Indore after getting no response despite repeated calls on his son's mobile phone.

A team of Tukoganj police rushed to his son's flat and found Dr Priyanka (30), her parents PC Pandey, 62, and Savitri Pandey, 60, lying dead in pool of blood in one of the rooms of the two-bedroom flat, while the medico-couple's six-month-old daughter Suhi was lying dead on bed in the other bed room.

The police team later found Dr Rohit Dwivedi, himself, hanging through a ceiling fan inside the kitchen, while a 13-page suicide note was found kept on an LPG gas cylinder in the kitchen, along with a few bank cheques signed by the young radiologist in favour of his father Dr GP Dwivedi.

Dr Priyanka was an assistant professor at department of gyanecology, Mahatma Gandhi Medical College (MGMC) but was not going to work for more than six months, even after expiry of her maternity leave.

According to deputy inspector general of police (DIG Indore) Rakesh Gupta preliminary investigations suggest that prolonged tension between the medico couple could be the reason behind the extreme step.

While, it's clear that Dr Rohit had mercilessly killed his wife and in-laws, it's also suspected that he might have killed his daughter also.

Among the three hacked to death by the doctor, his father-in-law PC Pandey (a retired bank employee) hailing from Patel Nagar, Patna was killed most brutally as his intestines were belching out of stomach area. "The blood stained sharp-edged surgical tools used to commit the brutal killings has also been recovered from the spot," SP (Indore East) OP Tripathi said.

The post-mortem of all five bodies were being conducted at the time of filling this report.

According to police sources, Dr Rohit (who worked at a medical clinic in Rajendra Nagar-Indore was not having a good relation with his wife Dr Priyanka and their parents had come to Indore apparently to solve the matter.

The contents of the suicide note purportedly written by Dr Rohit clearly suggest that he was not happy with wife and particularly blamed his in-laws for all problems. The note also pointed towards some major spat that took place on Saturday night between the radiologist and his wife and in-laws, which could have triggered the horrific episode.

Two parents have been charged with second-degree murder after their month-old son was brought into a Markham, Ont., hospital last week, with vital signs absent, say York Regional Police.

Police say the infant was brought into hospital on Aug. 22. His subsequent death was jointly investigated by the police and the coroner.

"There was foul play suspected and with the investigation, the baby had signs of trauma to the head," Const. Andy Pattenden told CBC News in an interview on Wednesday.

Five days after the child was brought to hospital, his parents were arrested.

The boy's father, 21-year-old Kien Phat Tran, and the boy’s mother, 22-year-old Thi My Phuong Bui, have each been charged with second-degree murder.

CBC News has learned that the boy's parents are from Vietnam and are in the country on student visas. They have been living in a home on Lucien Street, near Highway 407 and McCowan Road, for the past year.

Police would like to hear from anyone who knows the family or has information about this case.

NEW YORK — In a case that gave a legal airing to the debate over use of the N-word among blacks, a federal jury has rejected a black manager's argument that it was a term of love and endearment when he aimed it at black employee.

Jurors awarded $30,000 in punitive damages Tuesday after finding last week that the manager's four-minute rant was hostile and discriminatory, and awarding $250,000 in compensatory damages.

The case against Rob Carmona and the employment agency he founded, STRIVE East Harlem, hinged on the what some see as a complex double standard surrounding the word: It's a degrading slur when uttered by whites but can be used at times with impunity among blacks.

But 38-year-old Brandi Johnson told jurors that being black didn't make it any less hurtful when Carmona repeatedly targeted her with the slur during a March 2012 tirade about inappropriate workplace attire and unprofessional behavior.

Johnson, who taped the remarks after her complaints about his verbal abuse were disregarded, said she fled to the restroom and cried for 45 minutes.

"I was offended. I was hurt. I felt degraded. I felt disrespected. I was embarrassed," Johnson testified.

The jury ordered Carmona to pay $25,000 in punitive damages and STRIVE to pay $5,000.

Outside court after her victory, Johnson said she was "very happy" and rejected Carmona's claims from the witness stand Tuesday that the verdict made him realize he needs to "take stock" of how he communicates with people he is trying to help.

"I come from a different time," Carmona said hesitantly, wiping his eyes repeatedly with a cloth.

"So now, now you're sorry?" Johnson said outside court, saying she doubted his sincerity and noting Carmona had refused to apologize to her in court last week. She said he should have been sorry on March 14, 2012, "the day when he told me the N-word eight times."

Her lawyer, Marjorie M. Sharpe, said she hoped the case sent a strong message to those who "have tried to take the sting out of the N-word. ... It's the most offensive word in the English language."

Carmona left the courthouse without immediately commenting, as did all eight jurors.

In a statement, STRIVE said it was disappointed but was exploring its options, including an appeal and looking forward to the "judicial process taking its entire course."

It also cited Johnson as a "prime example of the second chances that STRIVE provides to both its participants and nonparticipants alike."

It noted that Johnson, who was never a STRIVE participant, was employed there despite a previous conviction for grand larceny that required her to pay about $100,000 in restitution. The judge barred lawyers from telling jurors about the conviction.

In closing arguments, Sharpe had said Carmona's use of the word was intended to offend "and any evidence that defendants put forth to the contrary is simply ridiculous."

"When you use the word nigger to an African-American, no matter how many alternative definitions that you may try to substitute with the word nigger, that is no different than calling a Hispanic by the worst possible word you can call a Hispanic, calling a homosexual male the worst possible word that you can call a homosexual male," Sharpe told jurors.

But Carmona's lawyers said the 61-year-old black man of Puerto Rican descent had a much different experience with the word. Raised by a single mother in a New York City public housing project, he became addicted to heroin in his teens and broke it with the help of drug counselors who employed tough love and tough language.

Carmona went on to earn a master's degree from Columbia University before co-founding STRIVE in the 1980s. Now, most of STRIVE's employees are black women, his attorney, Diane Krebs, told jurors in her opening statement.

"And Mr. Carmona is himself black, as you yourselves can see," Krebs said.

In his testimony, Carmona defended his use of the word, saying he used it with Johnson to convey that she was "too emotional, wrapped up in her, at least the negative aspects of human nature."

Then he explained that the word has "multiple contexts" in the black and Latino communities, sometimes indicating anger, sometimes love.

Carmona said he might put his arm around a longtime friend in the company of another and say: "This is my nigger for 30 years."

"That means my boy, I love him, or whatever," he said.

He was asked if he meant to indicate love when he called Johnson the word.

"Yes, I did," he responded.

The controversy is a blemish on STRIVE, which has been heralded for helping people with troubled backgrounds get into the workforce. Its employment model, which was described in a CBS' "60 Minutes" piece as "part boot camp, part group therapy," claims to have helped nearly 50,000 people find work since 1984.

Sharpe told jurors that STRIVE's tough-love program cannot excuse Carmona's behavior.

"Well, if calling a person a nigger and subjecting them to a hostile work environment is part of STRIVE's tough love, then STRIVE needs to be reminded that this type of behavior is illegal and cannot be tolerated," she said.
