only if you will give me some Ketch!

we do our sacrifice either in Guyana, or orphanages in India and Africa.

I do know that there's a bit of a controversy about that......some of the learned say it is okay....some say you should do it in your own community so you can partake of the meat.

but.....my argument is.....those performing Hajj do not partake of the meat from their own animal sacrificed!

I EXTEND greetings and best wishes to all Guyanese, but especially to the Muslim community celebrating Eid- ul- Adha.

Each year, when this celebration comes around, I am deeply touched and moved by the numerous acts of generosity and charity shown by our Muslim Brothers and Sisters to those in need.

This defining feature of Eid- ul-Adha reinforces the conviction that we are social beings and the afflictions of our fellow human beings should affect us all.

In the face of misfortune suffered by others, we are all called to be their keepers and to reach out to them with acts of gentleness, humility and kindness.

We do not need to be rich or lavish to show consideration to others.

By extending a loving and caring hand to those experiencing need, misfortune, pain, grief and loneliness, we can help to make their pains lighter and more bearable.

On this special occasion of Eid- Ul- Adha, may we be reminded of the need to help others, to shoulder the burdens and worries caused by misfortune or missteps.

And may we reach out to them with the purest of hearts and the noblest of intentions.

Happy Eid- Ul- Adha to all!

Madame Deolatchmee Ramotar

1896 Petition of Guyanese Muslim merchants to the Combined Court of British Guiana

As Guyanese Muslims are getting ready to observe the celebrations of Eid Ul Azha, better known as “Bacra” Eid or Qurbani, we take you back to the year 1896, a historical occasion for our brothers and sisters in Islam in Guyana today. It is an opportune time for us to reflect on the many sacrifices (Qurbani) that our ancestors made in their adopted homeland while instilling their religious practices on the future generations, and which today has survived vibrantly in Guyana.

In 1896 a group of “Mahomedans” merchants from Georgetown led by Gool Mohumad Khan, Goolam Ally, Goolam Aidin, K. H. Dharsee, Kareem Baccus, and a few others of the Mussulman faith sent a petition to the Combined Court of British Government in which they requested a grant of money for the purpose of constructing a mosque and a school in Queenstown Ward (where today sits the Queenstown Jamma masjid) and where the children of the “immigrants” would attend the school attached to the mosque. The petition was signed by Muslims from across Guyana led by the Gool Mohumad Khan, who was born in 1853 and was a Yusufzai Pathan from Swat, Afghanistan. Khan arrived in British Guiana on 11th May, 1877 on board the ship King Arthur.  In 1906 he returned to India with his family, leaving two of his 11 children (which can be considered a sacrifice) with his wife’s sister (who were childless) in British Guiana as well as a rich legacy of his contributions to the Muslims.

In said petition,  the petitioners drew attention to the fact that there was no proper place of worship or schools where they can congregate especially for Fridays’ prayers or where their children may be educated without losing their religious background.  The petitioners felt that the benefits to the colony “must be apparent to the British government to have the East Indian immigrants and their children educated in a proper manner and in their mother tongue (Urdu) as well as in the English language, by teachers from one of the colleges of India”.  The petitioners argued that since a great portion of the immigrants leave the Colony for India, the building of a school and mosque would serve as an incentive for many to stay on in British Guiana.

The petitioners further went on to urge the Court to take into consideration that “the growing number of East Indian Immigrants in the colony, the sad want of education in the faith of their forebears and their want of an education in their mother tongue.” They also brought attention to the religious discrimination against non-Christians, and urge the government to grant the Muslim financial help, which would benefit the colony as much as the parents and children whereby the East Indian children would be better educated. This sort of pleading with the British governor general continued up until the 1950s by other subsequent Muslim organizations, but the British denied the Muslims any help. While, the Christian schools continued to receive funding from the British government but not the Muslims nor the Hindus which the petitioners raised back in 1896.

At the time (1896) of signing the petition, according to the petitioners, there were about 105,463 Hindustanis in British Guiana and among those 32,432 were born in the colony and about 20,000 were Muslims.

Throughout the period of indentureship and up until independence East Indians on the whole were denied education and employment in the public sector, unless they converted to Christianity. This was yet another sacrifice they were forced to endure in order to further their socio-economic standing in the “eyes of the British”.

To our Muslim brothers and sisters in Islam we wish you a happy Eid-ul-Adha.

A special thanks to Professor Wazir Mohamed, of  the University of Indiana  and the Anna Catherina Sunnatal Jamaat who shared this historical document with us.

Sincerely,

Shabnam Ally
Raymond Chickrie

Shiek Azeez, 37, of Guyana, was arrested on suspicion of attempted second degree murder and aggravated burglary in connection with Thursday's shooting at an apartment complex atop Huntoon Hill.   Rate this item    (3 votes)       Demerara Waves     (TOPEKA CAPITAL JOURNAL).-Police have arrested the suspect in a shooting on October 10, in west Topeka, Kansas, United States that injured a woman identified only as the man’s wife.

Shiek Azeez, 37, of Guyana, was booked into the Shawnee County Jail in connection with attempted second-degree murder. Bond has been set at $500,000 cash or professional surety. His next court date is set for 8:30 a.m. Jan. 15.

Azeez was booked into jail at 2:38 a.m. Friday. He also was booked in connection with aggravated burglary.

Topeka Police Department Capt. Brian Desch on Friday said the shooting victim was Azeez’s spouse, but wouldn’t identify her beyond that because of the domestic nature of the dispute. She had been shot multiple times and incurred what police officials initially described as life-threatening injuries. Police said she was admitted to Stormont-Vail Health Care in stable condition.

Police were called at 8:15 p.m. Thursday to 1306 S.W. Summit Woods Drive, the Overlook Apartments complex atop Huntoon Hill, on the report of a shooting. The female victim was immediately taken to Stormont-Vail, and a police perimeter was established around the immediate area. A Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter and K-9 units assisted in an intense search that included the commercial areas just east of Huntoon Hill.

Shortly before 10 p.m., a man matching the broadcast description of the person being sought was located by police about a block away from the shooting site. Police established that the man was Azeez and took him to the Law Enforcement Center for questioning. He was booked into jail early Friday.

A police news release stated the incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information may call the police department at (785) 368-9400 or Crime Stoppers at (785) 234-0007.

and this is how the mad jackass in Syria had his countrymen/women and children celebrate eid - forced them to eat cats, dogs and donkey. I am sure if they were rearing pigs they would have eaten that on eid day as well.

Muslim cleric issues fatwa allowing starving Syrians to eat cats, dogs, and donkeys In an effort to take down rebels, the Assad regime is holding thousands of Syrians under siege in Damascus suburbs. Food has become so precious that some have begun to eat cats and dogs in order to survive. Comments (5) By Carol Kuruvilla / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS  Wednesday, October 16, 2013, 2:42 PM
