Melbourne, Australia - On an Australian talk show recently mining multi-millionaire turned populist right-wing politician Clive Palmer called officials in Beijing "Chinese mongrels" who were trying to "take over this country". He later apologised.
The following day, a member of Palmer's political party, Senator Jacqui Lambie, chimed in saying successive governments had failed to build an Australian military capable of stopping "our grandchildren from becoming slaves" to the Chinese.
Several weeks later, with Australia raising its terrorism alert to "high" amid police raids and sensationalist media coverage, the focus turned to the Muslim community.
Lambie followed up her anti-China comments by posting a manipulated photo of an Afghan policewoman killed by the Taliban on Facebook as part of her campaign to ban the veil in Australia - while denouncing Islamic law along the way.

1901, laws were passed to repatriate many Pacific island labourers in northern Australia, many of whom were brought over as slaves. Indigenous Australians, meanwhile, would
not be considered citizens
until 1967.

Everyone is aware of the fact that there is a racism problem in Australia except Australians themselves. They believe they are quite a tolerant people. Now, that is not to say that all Australians are racist, because they are not. And I will not paint an entire nation with the same brush as that is unfair and wrong. However, racism is embedded in all aspects of Australian society, ranging from the school playground to the workplace, to the sporting field. High profile Aboriginals are abused on the sporting field. When the ADL threatened a Muslim woman with rape and beheading her and her family, the police took no action regardless of the fact that she informed them of the threats numerous times. When a Muslim man allegedly was plotting to behead an Australian citizen, 800 police officers were involved in counter-terrorism raids of 25 houses and arrested two individuals - one for making the threat and the other for handling firearms. Muslim women are being spat at, abused, threatened with having their scarves burnt, prams are being kicked over, cars are being damaged and racist taunts are being hurled at them. People, including children are always being told “to go back to where they came from†as though the Australians did not arrive here in ships and chains. They forget their violent history of stealing aboriginal land and killing aboriginal people, forcefully separating children from their families and attempting to “breed†the Aboriginals out.
When it comes to immigration, the forums on Australian media outlets such as the SMH are filled with racist comments. Compassion disappears and the territorial claws come out. What is forgotten is that Australia's involvement in the War in Iraq and Afghanistan has contributed to the increase in boat arrivals. There is evidence of torture, rape and abuse of the Tamils who have been sent back to their country after fleeing to Australia. Australia's immigration policy is shameful. Children are suffering psychological issues, there are claims of sexual abuse in detention centres, attempted suicides are on the rise, and detainees are sewing their lips as they go on hunger strikes. Pictures drawn by children at the centre depict guards as monsters. And why does this policy continue? Because of the deeply ingrained racism that is entrenched within the politicians.
Mentioning racism puts Australians on the defensive. It's not a topic they take to positively and will always react negatively if such an issue is raised. The difference between Australia and other countries is that the racism is covert.
