Patty, do not quote Thomas Sowell. Sowell is a reknowned evil doer, CATO and HERITAGE puppet and is routinely rolled out by corporations, banks and the US government to rubber stamp every reactionary policy they hope to implement. It is his job to con people or miss the point. I've been reading him since the 70s, and he was doing this schtick then as well.

You seem infatuated with "independence" and "people being dependent" on "government". Why? You should read some books on contemporary neuroscience (Thomas Metzinger, Daniel Dennet etc). Every scientist in the field has long overturned the notion of "independence", "selfhood" and even hard free will. Most of what "you" do "you" are conscious of only moments after the action. So you are not in control of, and have no conscious input into, many of the  simplest things you do, think or feel, yet here you are demanding that "others" not be "dependent" on outside forces. Why do you really think that is?

Libertarians typically quote Sowell. In the 80s, before the modern libertarian movement, Sowell was big with Reagannites. And today, in the internet era, nobody stumbles across Sowell unless they have a pretty distinct set of beliefs.

What I think about him, is that he is stepping into his power, if you will. He is at least saying things which people need to hear, or at the very least force them to think, because very few people in this country have the ability to think anymore(I speak of the U.S), they've all been anesthetized by television and Big Pharma.
