Rote memorization of religious texts has the intended effect of dulling the critical faculties.  It's why the Messianic Jews and the extremist Muslims force their children to do it.

It's a vile,  contemptible, and wicked thing to do to a child.  In my view it is the exact same as physical abuse and it should be abolished and made a crime.
