A large number of guns were Friday afternoon seized at a city wharf by customs officers during the clearance of a barrel that was sent from the United States (US),  Commissioner General of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) Kurshid Sattaur said.

A senior police officer told Demerara Waves Online News that the guns include two AK-47 assault rifles, several 9MM pistols and more than 100 rounds of ammunition.

The find was made about 2 PM at the La Parkan Wharf, Lombard Street, Georgetown by the Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) of the GRA.

The detainee, who is unemployed, is said to be a resident of the lower East Coast Demerara.

Sattaur said the weapons and one suspect were handed over to the police, as part of an inter-agency cooperation.
