DISTURBING realities of death and social dysfunction within three hinterland communities are now being brought to the surface as fed-up residents readily complained to officials during a weekend visit to the North- West District. The officials were drawn from the Ministry of Indigenous People’s Affairs, the Ministry of Social Protection and the Guyana Women Miners Organisation (GWMO).
The mission which saw an outreach to residents of Port Kaituma, Arakaka and Baramita between Friday and Sunday last was pre-arranged by the GWMO as the organisation intensifies its fight against exploitation of women, while seeking to improve conditions for them in all sectors.
As a result of the complaints received, the GWMO dispatched a letter to Minister of Indigenous People’s Affairs Sydney Allicock, underlining the challenges faced by the communities according to what was reported to the officials, a copy of which was made available to this publication.
Copies of that letter were also sent to Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan, Minister of Education Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine, Minister of Public Health Dr. George Norton, Minister of Social Protection Volda Lawrence, Minister of Governance Raphael Trotman, Commissioner of Police Seelall Persaud and Welfare Coordinator in the Ministry of Indigenous People’s Affairs, Ms. Welch.

A GANG of five bandits on Sunday night invaded the home of an East Berbice couple, beating and robbing them of them of an undisclosed sum of money and other effects. The robbery reportedly occurred around 22:00 hrs at the couple’s Lot 257 Number Two Village, East Coast Berbice home.
Sixty-two-year-old Patrick Mangra told reporters that he and his wife had just returned home from a Chinese restaurant when they were attacked.
“We went in and sit down under the house, not ready to go upstairs as yet, and I see three men running coming from the back with their face tied up,” Mangra said.
As they held on to him, Mangra said, he tried to fight them off, but was unsuccessful.
“They tear off the vest I was wearing, and tied my hands, he said. “I fight with them. Then one of them say, ‘Hit him!’ “After two hours, I wake up and I see my foot tie, and everything in the house gone.”
He’s not sure whether any of the men had a firearm, as he did not see them with one; so he could not say what they used to hit him with.
His wife, Revina Seeberchan, meanwhile, was accosted by two other masked men who’d entered the yard, and taken into the house where she was told no harm would come to her if she cooperated.
Having gotten her assurance, they proceeded to help themselves to whatever money, local or foreign, they could find; they, however, reneged on their promise not to hurt her, they beat and trussed her up when she was not forthcoming enough about where the jewellery and money were.
Among items the intruders took away were the couple’s passports, three cellular phones, three gold chains and a bracelet, and an 82-inch television set.
According to the couple, the ordeal lasted close to two hours, and that it was the first time they were robbed since returning home for good from neighbouring Suriname back in May.
Following the incident, Mangra was admitted as a patient at the New Amsterdam Hospital, while Seeberchan was treated at the same institution and sent away. Up to press time, the couple was still trying to ascertain what items were taken away. Police are investigating. No arrests have been made as yet.
BICYCLE BANDITS
Meanwhile, in another incident, a cane harvester was severely beaten by bandits during an attack at Rose Hall on Saturday, police have confirmed.
Seenarine Kalimuldon is now a patient at the New Amsterdam Hospital, nursing fractures to both of his arms. Kalimuldon told this newspaper that he was in New Amsterdam to do shopping with his family when the bandits pounced on him around 18:45 hrs.
“We went together, and then I stop to buy credit,” the 53-year-old of Chesney, Corentyne related. According to him, as soon as he left the shop, the two men who were following him on bicycles began closing in on him.
“I start to ride fast, but they catching me up, so I decide to turn through one of them fine street to meet up with meh children faster, but they ride straight behind me.
“I don’t know where they get a piece ah wood so fast, and clap one lash pon me and break mi hand two places.”
The man said he collapsed, and one of the bandits ran through his pocket and took away $20,000 along with a cellular phone and his bicycle. He said by the time he got up, the bandits had already escaped.
He said he tried chasing behind them, but to no avail. The matter has since been reported to the police.

[www.inewsguyana.com] – An elderly re-migrant couple from East Canje, Berbice suffered a devastating act of robbery on Sunday night (October 25) when a gang of five men intruded their home and demanded their valuables.

iNews understands that at around 21:00 hrs, five men broke into the lot 257 No. 2 Village home of 62 – year – old Patrick Mangar and 66 – year – old Ravina Seeberchan and carted off with a television set, cash and other items.

The incident has also left Mangar a patient at the New Amsterdam Hospital, after he suffered a laceration to his head; his wife was also treated at the hospital for similar injuries and sent away.

iNews understands that the couple was sitting downstairs when the masked men crouched into the yard and carried out the attack. According to reports, the bandits took the couple to the back of the house and demanded cash and jewellery. At the time, Seeberchan was wearing several pieces of jewellery and she gave it to the bandits.

The men then took her upstairs and demanded that she cooperate with them as they threatened kill her. Fearful for her life, the woman handed over an undisclosed amount of jewellery and $35,000 cash. She told iNews that the bandits tied her up and ransacked the house as they searched for items of value.

Now this is satire:

New crime fighting

October 25, 2015 By GuyanaTimes

Satiricus could see that most Guyanese weren’t prepared to change. He was thinking about crime and more to the point, about fighting crime. When he was a lad, the papers were filled with reports of “crack crime sleuths” rushing to crime scenes and before you could say “boo!” they’d “cracked” the case. As a callow youth, Satiricus figured that’s why they called the detectives “crack”. It was NOT because they were “cracked” in the head, or they “cracked” prisoners’ skulls.

But today was a new day! Wasn’t it? Why did people expect the new Caped Crusader Rum Jhaat to fight crime the old way? So what if the old way did solve crimes? If the Jhaat didn’t try new things, they’d be snickering at him during Cabinet meetings. (Which his Buddy Naga Man still wasn’t qualified to chair.) This was a modern 21st Century Cabinet that he was part of. Back when the Police Force had been formed, folks didn’t live no much beyond 40 years or so.

There had been so much progress and today more than three-quarters of the Cabinet were more than 70 years old. They made fun of him because he hadn’t touched 60 yet. Called him “kid” and “bai”. Like in “Bring me a drink, kid”, when they were hanging out. Anyhow, Rum Jhaat swore he’d show them. Actually his swear  was, “Dem guh gat fuh haul dey ass when I done wid dis crime business”. The first thing he did was to change the name of his crime fighting outfit. “Wha de rass is “Home Affairs? Sound like a Guyana “Desperate Housewives”. Satiricus thought that was very witty.

He figured that “National Security” sounded much more macho, which suited Rum Jhaat’s unshaven mug. Then in a master stroke, which no one gave him enough credit for, Rum Jhaat imposed the 2am curfew on bars. What that had to do with crime? That was where the Jhaat’s genius kicked in. Being a Hindu astrologer who could determine the planetary alignment for Divali, he knew that 2am was the inauspicious hour when Mars was on top of Venus.

This was when most criminals hatched their nefarious plans. All good people would be sleeping so there were no mental barrier to evil plans. Until now! Then there was the gun amnesty the Jhaat introduced. More than three quarters of the guns were from the interior where folks hunted for meat. But the Jhaat knew that a life of crime and criminality was a slippery slope. “Today they huntin’ for labba. But what about tomorrow when dem na gat no more labba?” thought Rum Jhaat. “Some a demna use fuh eat people long time?” Rum Jhaat wondered to himself. He patted himself on the back. Crime would soon be a thing of the past!
