Fifty-seven-year-old Oma Jagdeo, was found dead in the house her brother had built for her on his property, by her two children.

Jagdeo confirmed that the body of his 57-year old sister, Oma, was found by his niece and nephew in the house. “She was the one living with me. She is the youngest but older than me,”

He said she was his sibling who had lived with him at State House and at his private residence while he was Head of State and now Opposition Leader.

Jagdeo said that he was not aware if his sister was suffering from any medical conditions at the time of her demise and did not want to speculate on the cause of her death at this time.

The Government of Guyana has expressed “deep condolences” to Leader of the Opposition Bharrat Jagdeo on the passing of his sister Oma Jagdeo.
The 57-year-old woman was found dead in Jagdeo’s Prado Ville 2 mansion on Sunday and police sources have suspected the woman died as a result of a heart attack.
The government in a release stated “The Government of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana expresses deep condolences to Leader of the Opposition, the Honourable Bharrat Jagdeo, his relatives and the People’s Progressive Party on the sad passing of his beloved sister Oma ‘Shanta’ Jagdeo.”
The Government said it salutes Ms. Jagdeo for her unflagging love for her brother to whom she was not only an older sibling but to whom she was also like a second mother.
“The loss of a sibling, particularly, a sibling to whom one is particularly close as Mr. Jagdeo was to Ms. Jagdeo, leaves a void which can hardly be filled. The nation stands in solidarity with and holds Mr. Jagdeo up in prayer, in this, his time of grief,” the statement noted.

The ruling APNU+AFC coalition won 25 of the 30 seats that make up the Georgetown City Council in the local government elections contested on Friday, which saw less than 40% of registered voters casting their ballots countrywide.

Of these 25 seats, 11 were won through Proportional Representation and 14 were won by the coalition’s First-Past-The-Post candidates. In fact, the coalition won the First-Past-The-Post seat in every constituency it contested.

Speaking on behalf of the successful coalition, Sherod Duncan, who won the heavily contested Constituency 14 (South Ruimveldt Park/ Ruimveldt Industrial Site) First-Past-The-Post seat, said APNU+AFC believed that the people spoke.
