Attempts to eradicate domestic violence must start with an investigation into causation, President David Granger said today, adding that it will take time to undo decades of a culture of criminal violence.
He was speaking this morning at a seminar on tackling domestic abuse sponsored by the Supreme Court of Judicature in collaboration with the Commonwealth Secretariat at the Marriott Guyana Hotel.
The President also linked the deepening scourge to what he termed The “Troublesâ€, the decade between 2000 and 2009 which had seen intense and sustained criminal violence triggered mainly by the escape of five prisoners in 2002 from the Camp Street jail.
President David GrangerGranger excoriated the then PPP/C government for refusing to conduct the requisite inquiries into these crimes and said that the populace is suffering the `secondary impact’ of years of criminal violence that they saw on the streets and in the media.
