Kentucky lawmakers are looking to pass a bill that would allow the Bible to be taught as an ELECTIVE in high school. Do you think this is constitutional? Do you think other religious books, like the Torah and Koran should be taught as well? Do you think this is indoctrinating students?

Why not teach the bible in church? Why are these people so needy and dramatic with their religion?

This brings to mind that old quote from the CEO of McDonald's about marketing to kids. I paraphrase but it was like if you get to them before age 5 they are customers for life. Similar aim here I'm sure. Teach religion, not one specific one. Better yet, have a class on critical thinking. Evolve!

Well this is just the classic debate of separation of church and state.  It really varies wherever you go, and even when it is legislated out it seems to make its way in somehow, and I think that it is just a part of modern life.  I think that it just makes sense to separate the two though, but that is just my opinion.  It does take me back to the good old Constitutional Law days in college, those were some wild times.

If it's a course that explores the history of the Bible, or any other religious documents/books, then that would be an interesting elective, from an academic standpoint. However, I doubt that a school in a place like Kentucky is even thinking on that level, and my guess is that this is all about spreading Christianity, which I am against.

HOWEVER. I DO think that, if it is offered as an elective, that is an interesting compromise. As far as the constitutionality of the matter, I'll leave it to others to discern. I'm not sure.

i went to catholic school - along with MANY other muslims students.

they never forced us to pray their prayers but just asked that we would attend mass when they had it 2x a year in the school cafeteria.  we were lucky that we had a school chaplain that didnt preach "jesus" specifically and kept the sermons very open so that all the students could take ssomething from it.

we had a religion class that we had to take every year. it explored the history of the bible (old and new). it highlighted world religions where we had the most assignments due. it discussed controversial topics such as the divinity of Christ - it true or not?

We had prayer every morning - the Lords prayer and that was it.

no indoctrination.  it was great.

Mrs.Singh (kyla friend) marched me to the office :refused to clasp hands and close eyes

Hmmm... My husband went to a Catholic school. They were taught prayers, praying the rosary, reading the bible and even have masses during the first Friday of every month. Anyway, up to now, he still has all those prayers memorised.

On the other hand, my school wasn't so strict with that. We did have a few masses but they weren't too strict with prayers or reading the bible.

So as far as teaching the bible in public school, I won't have a problem with that. But you know what, I would have loved if other religion's teachings or history are also taught. That could have enlightened me more about them.
