The Ganges is revered in India but it is also the sewer that carries away the waste

from the 450 million people who live in its catchment area.  .

The prime minister, Narendra Modi, a Hindu nationalist, sees cleaning up the Ganges

as nothing less than a mission from God.

He has pledged serious money to his Clean Ganga Mission

- more than $3bn over five years.

From what I've read, the Ganges River is so toxic and it is about 3,000 times over the limit set upon by WHO as safe. Apparently, about a billion wastes and garbages are thrown in the river on a daily basis. Apart from that, bodies are cremated on the river's bank because locals believe this can help them go to heaven. Not to mention that carcasses are also dumped into the river.

Another contributor to the water pollution? Factories near the river which dump their toxic wastes into it. Particularly, leather factories that dump their chemicals into the river. Chromium is such a toxic chemical that can destroy marine life and the water itself.

Sadly, this is where we've gone to... We can create satellites, go to the moon, send rovers to Mars... We can have the best gadgets in the world. But we cannot maintain our rivers and bodies of water. Worse, we destroy and pollute them.

Whilst one can't deny the indubitable fact that Ganga stands to be one the holiest and most sacred rivers in India, we need to keep in mind that all rivers need to be made absolutely pollution-free. We can cite the paragon of "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan" (Clean India Campaign) wherein all political parties have "joined hands" selflessly to clean the streets and roads of every nook and corner of India. Plenitude of people have taken cognizance of this "noblest endeavour" extremely earnestly since one can see them them cleanse even the "littlest" specks of dust into a "litter" — If we endeavour the same with respect to rivers like "Ganga", I'm sure that the pollution of rivers can be controlled to that "satisfactory" extent as can create a new A NTI-CONTAMINATE R IVER M ISSION, where people can join ARM IN ARM for one of the best noblest missions ever undertaken in our History! Let's pray God to Bless us chant that "Passionate Penchant" for the Betterment of All!

India and its pollution issues are as common as latinoamerican corruption scandals. A 1560 miles river basin maintaining 400 million of people, yikes. Albeit sacred, the river is heavily polluted by human and industrial wastes. If the river dies, all its local species, included the once common ganges shark, will die too.

Many has suggested that this problem also is caused by climate change. In the city of Varanasi, the Ganges is much shallower than it one was
