President Obama signed a bill that will prevent U.S. Olympic gold, silver, and bronze medalists from having to pay a "victory tax" on their earnings, according to the Associated Press.
The U.S. Olympic Committee awarded $25,000 for gold, $15,000 for silver, and $10,000 for bronze to U.S. Olympians in Rio. Before this bill, Olympic medalists--who often have an annual income that puts them at or below the poverty line--were paying standard tax rates on their Olympic bonuses. While $25,000 doesn't sound like a lot, for athletes in less famous events, that could be among the biggest windfalls of their careers.
The bill passed the House 415-1 and passed the Senate by a unanimous consent. It will retroactively reduce the tax bills of athletes who competed in Rio this summer.
Lawmakers against this tax argued that Olympic athletes spend years aiming for one or multiple medals, and that training is an expense in itself.
The tax hasn't completely gone away, however. Team USA medalists who make at least $1 million a year will be subject to the tax; swimmer Michael Phelps is just one example.
This law does not restrict taxes placed on athletes' endorsement income or non-Olympic prize winnings.

A Guyanese man was brutally stabbed to death in his Boston home by his wife during an early Friday morning argument.
The man has been identified as Collis Edwards. His wife, Karen Edwards, has since been charged with murder.
According to reports, Boston Police were called to the city’s Roxbury neighborhood early Friday morning. Officers responded to the area of 88 Wensley St. shortly after midnight.
They found the suspect, a man in this late 30s, suffering from a stab wound. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Appearing very confused in court, 36-year-old Karen Edwards of Brooklyn, New York was charged with murder in the stabbing death of her husband Collins Edwards inside this Wensley Street apartment in Roxbury just after midnight Friday.
Prosecutors said the couple who had been married about a year had gotten into a fight, and the victim’s mother called 9-1-1 to say her son had been stabbed in the chest by his wife.
The prosecutor said, “The defendant said she was going to stab her husband and went into the kitchen, grabbed a large knife from the knife block.â€
Edwards continued to interrupt prosecutors and the judge in court, as a not guilty plea was entered on her behalf.
“Doctor can I see you please?†asked Edwards in court.
Edwards was examined by a forensic psychologist and her attorney John Miller said it’s unclear what she remembers about what happened overnight.
Miller said, “She was evaluated by the court clinic and there appears to be some very serious mental health issues and she will now be evaluated by the Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Center to determine her competence to stand trial and to determine the issues of criminal responsibility.â€
Edwards is being held without bail pending that mental health evaluation.
She’s due back in court October 27, 2016.
