Outstanding doctor Enid Denbow passes

RENOWNED daughter of the soil and one of Guyana’s outstanding medical practitioners, Dr Enid Denbow passed away on Wednesday at the age of 95.
Dr Denbow, who was conferred with the Cacique Crown of Honour (CCH) in October last year by President David Granger, has been admired for her long, dedicated and outstanding service in the field of medicine. She held the distinction of being the first and only female Chief Medical Officer within the Health Ministry for several years.

Born Enid Lucille Wilson to Edwin and Verleigh Wilson on August 3, 1921, she was one of three siblings who resided with her parents at Hadfield Street in the city.
She attended the St Joseph High School and after graduating, she became a pupil nurse at Georgetown Public Hospital. Her performance saw her earning the highest score nationally on both the nursing and midwifery examinations. At the age of 22 she lost both of her parents but that did not halt her upward mobility.

Later, in 1948 she attended Howard University in Washington D.C and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in Zoology. She would then earn a medical degree from Women’s Medical College, Philadelphia in 1955.
Among her academic accomplishments, Dr Denbow earned the prestigious Membership of the Royal College of Physicians, England. She was also awarded a Cardiology Fellowship from the world-renowned John Hopkins University Hospital and she became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. Such was her record that she was considered among the cream of the crop in the medical field in Guyana.

Her stellar academic and professional performance vaulted her to the top of the medical field in Guyana. She is viewed as a light of inspiration for many women. She was the godmother of many.
