Seems to me that this Swami Dyanand wanted to bring about a Lutheran type reformation to Hinduism. I.e. prohibiting the use of idols during rituals, allowing women to become members of the priestly class, and allowing non-Brahmins to read and interpret Sanskrit texts.

But he's a Hindu. Just like the Lutherans genuinely believe they are Christians. :

As an atheist all of this is just semantics to me tho.

At least Martin luther tried to reform the roman catholic church without changing it beliefs system . Dyanand chose to change the belief system by pontificating for mono atheism in hinduism.

Well one could argue that the idea of mono-theism has always existed in Hinduism. The idea of the atman (soul) being liberated from the cycle of re-birth and death through Moksha and being at one with the supreme deity Brahman is in essence mono-theism. The human deities such as Ram, Sita, Krishna, Shiva etc. are nothing but earthly manifestations of the the one supreme being Brahman.
Any pundits here on WICF?

He may well have been pissed off by the Brahmin elites and their monopolization of the right to perform rituals, read and interpret sacred texts etc. He wouldn't have been the first either. In essence though, it seems that he was just attempting to re-brand the product as "new" and "improved".
