Interesting, but surely the Indians would have kept their language going by speaking it in private.  No?  Why didn't the British insist on them converting to Christianity and adopting English culture and lifestyles?

The Indians in Fiji and Mauritius kept their bhojpuri alive though.  To this day they still speak both creolese (french creolese in Mauritius) and bhojpuri.
