Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib (Arabic: علي بن أبي طالب, Transliteration: ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, Arabic pronunciation: [ʕæliː ibn ʔæbiː t̪ˤæːlib]; 13th Rajab, 24BH – 21st Ramaḍān, 40 AH; approximately October 23, 598 or 600[2] or March 17, 599 – January 27, 661[4]). This disagreement split the Ummah (Muslim community) into the Sunni and Shia branches.[1]
Muslim sources, especially Shia ones, state that Ali was the only person born in the Kaaba sanctuary in Mecca, the holiest place in Islam.[1] His father was Abu Talib and his mother was Fatima bint Asad,[1] but he was raised in the household of Muhammad, who himself was raised by Abu Talib, Muhammad's uncle, and Ali's father. When Muhammad reported receiving a divine revelation, Ali was the first male to accept his message, dedicating his life to the cause of Islam.[4][8][9][10]
Ali migrated to Medina shortly after Muhammad did. Once there Muhammad told Ali that God had ordered Muhammad to give his daughter, Fatimah, to Ali in marriage.[1] For the ten years that Muhammad led the community in Medina, Ali was extremely active in his service, leading parties of warriors on battles, and carrying messages and orders. Ali took part in the early caravan raids from Meccaand later in almost all the battles fought by the nascent Muslim community.
Ali was appointed Caliph by the Companions of Muhammad (the Sahaba) in Medina after the assassination of the third caliph, Uthman ibn Affan.[11][12] He encountered defiance and civil war during his reign. In 661, Ali was attacked one morning while worshipping in the mosque of Kufa, and died a few days later.[13][14][15]
In Muslim culture, Ali is respected for his courage, knowledge, belief, honesty, unbending devotion to Islam, deep loyalty to Muhammad, equal treatment of all Muslims and generosity in forgiving his defeated enemies, and therefore is central to mystical traditions in Islam such as Sufism. Ali retains his stature as an authority on Quranic exegesis, Islamic jurisprudence and religious thought.[16] Ali holds a high position in almost all Sufi orders which trace their lineage through him to Muhammad. Ali's influence has been important throughout Islamic history.[1]

During Moharram Shias mourn the killing of the Prophet's grandsons Hussein and Hassan, which led to the split between Sunni and Shia Muslims. This is know as a MATHAM ritual whein the Shias take out processions chanting the names ‘Ya Hasan! Ya Hussain!’ and beating their breasts, the brass bands play their loudest, and at every corner where space allowed, Mohammedan preachers tell the lamentable story of the death of the Martyrs." Shia Men, Women and children participate in this procession of beating on their chest with bare hands. But there is also one part of the shia community wherin the men do instrumental matham. They use chains, knives, blades and tube lights to inflict pain on themselves as a way of expressing sorrow. To know some intriguing facts visit the link "books.google.com/books?id=Q xpSf_JV0pEC&pg=PA52&lpg=PA52&dq=why +do+shias+beat+their+breasts+during +moharram&source=web&ots=uHNKOzVwN_ &sig=F9Jnz4GXCrmL5BLqUdUMX7cyRq0"

Do Shi'a Muslims believe Ali is a prophet?
i'm trying to understand what do Shi'a and Sunni Muslims disagree about
both agree that Allah is the one true god and Mohammad is his Prophet

Shi'a Muslims believe that Ali was the rightful successor of Mohammad instead of the guy that was actually chosen. but why is it important today, why is it important who was the successor of Mohammad 1400 years ago? isn't it just ancient politics?

as i understand Mohammad is the last prophet
so any leadership that came after Mohammad is earthly politics and all that matters is the quran?
why do Shi'a still care what happened with Ali, unless he was also a prophet

they seperate on the fact that after Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) died he was to appoint a successor, a Kalifah to lead the ppl. Without a leader the ppl(Umma) would scatter.

prior to his death the prophet was heard crying out "My Ummah, My Ummah"  he knew that they would segregate into different sects.

when he died the ppl declared that Ali was the next and most righteous to be the Kalifah. However half of the ppl disagreed and stated it was Abu Baker...the halves seperated in their belief and so you get the division of Shia and Sunni.

from Shia you get the Ismailies[sp] they believe in the Aga Khan

from the Sunnis, you get the Ahamdis - they believe the promised messiah has come already in the form of Mirza Ghulam Ahmed.

The Sunnis and other mainstream muslims declare that the Ahmadis are none muslims because of this belief. They say that Mohammed was the "Seal of the prophets" no more shall come after him.THIS IS A TRUE FACT. Allah had not promised another LAW BEARING Prophet. The law was set.

Yet in Quran there is evidence to state that a promised messiah must come amoungst the ppl as a reformer.  While the Sunnis do not dispute this fact, some of the sunnis believe that Jesus will be the one to come back on Judgement day and the rest are actually waiting for signs of the Promised Messiah.

Heres the catch - the book tells us we are to recieve a Messiah, it also tells us to beware of false prophets...hence the problem

When Jesus came amongst his ppl, they denied him, God's message was the same - i shall send a reformer to you but beware of false prophets. same story.....
