(CNN) -- A Navy jet struggled during take-off Friday over the military community of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and rained a stench of jet fuel shortly before crashing into apartment buildings, according to residents and Navy officials.

The two pilots, a police officer and three other people were taken to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, Dr. Thomas Thames, the hospital's vice president of medical affairs, told CNN affiliate WAVY.

None of the injuries was considered life-threatening, Thames said.

The crash and explosion ruptured the easy mood of spring break and the unfolding Easter holiday weekend, and the two-seater F/A-18 jet landed eerily upright in flames in a courtyard surrounded by five apartment buildings suddenly set afire, according to residents and authorities.

(CNN) -- Longtime women's activist and Malawian Vice President Joyce Banda took charge of her homeland Saturday, ending two days of political intrigue after the death of President Bingu wa Mutharika.

She was sworn in at a ceremony in the capital, Lilongwe, becoming Malawi's first female president.

Under the terms of Malawi's constitution, Banda, the former vice president, was in line to ascend to the highest office in the land. However, her falling out with the ruling party raised fears over a potential succession struggle.

Banda was expelled from the party in 2010 in a dispute with the president over his efforts to groom his brother as his eventual successor. She formed her the opposition People's Party, but remained vice president.

A government spokeswoman on Friday declared Banda not qualified to assume the presidency.

"The conduct of the honorable Joyce Banda in forming her own opposition party precludes her from being eligible to succeed the presidency," said Patricia Kaliati, who serves as information and civic education minister.

But Banda appealed for calm Saturday, and said the immediate focus of the country should be on the president's funeral and 10 days of national mourning.

a New Jersey doctor shot a former colleague to death over an alleged work dispute yesterday — then later killed himself when police stopped him on suspicion of murder.

Dr. Payman Houshmandpour, 32, was backing out of his driveway in Voorhees, NJ, headed for work at nearby Virtua Hospital when another physician, Giocondo Navek, 39, appeared behind his car.

When Houshmandpour brough the vehicle to a stop, Navek came around the driver’s side of the silver Audi and opened fire through the window, witnesses said.

“At first, I heard two gunshots a few seconds apart from each other,” said a neighbor, Ron Gorman Jr., 27. “Then four to five rapid gunshots, right in a row—just bang, bang, bang. It was really heinous.”
