Well.. the Indian politics is divided between the pro-Muslim and pro-Hindu parties.


The main opposition party (BJP) is a pro-Hindu party and it gets 0% of Muslim votes. It is mostly supported by the urban elite, and the Upper-caste Hindu population. Upper caste Hindus are some 15-20% of the Indian population. BJP also gets the vote from roughly half of the middle-castes (who compose around 30-40% of the population).


On the other hand, the ruling Congress party is pro-Muslim, and is supported by the minorities (Muslims, Christians, Tribals.etc). Most of their supporters are poor rural people and lower caste Hindus, who are mostly illiterate.


Muslims are around 15% of the population. According to the Census, the Christians are only 2%. But their actual population is around 6% (If you report yourself as a Christian, then you won't get Affirmative action benefits which are given to low caste Hindus).
