“We believe Phil is the right individual for our team and our region at this time, so we want to welcome him back home,” said West Indies Cricket Board chief executive Michael Muirhead.

“Phil has a proven ability to develop players, while cultivating great team spirit and a winning culture.

"We have a number of young, talented players about whom he is excited to be coaching and we believe he is the right fit."

Muirhead added: “Phil has impressed us with his understanding of the current realities of West Indies cricket and his ability to articulate practical examples and strategies of things that could be implemented within the team to improve performance.

“His independence of character and his resolve to stand up for what he believes in were also strong qualities that convinced us that Phil was best suited to usher the West Indies team into a new era of success.”

I'm happy to see big Phil as coach. He has a good record and I know he loves west Indies cricket. But to win overnight is a big ask. I want to see him instilling a professional work ethic among the players for them to consistently play like each match is their last. Trust me victories will come because we have the talent.

Couple of points. If the gulf between the eventual semi-finalists and the rest is so great then maybe this WC format was spot on i.e. an elongated carnival of cricket involving the associates then rapidly moving on to the semi-finals via the quarter-finals.

My other point concerns the so called one-sidedness of matches. Absence of last over excitement does not necessarily equal one-sideness. Due to astronomical run rates, games are being decided much earlier in the contest. Fifty-over cricket has become a nice blend of test match and T20 skills. The days when you could tune into a one-dayer in the 45th over and hope for a tight finish are over. That doesn't mean that the gulf is necessarily wider, just that the way in which we analyse a game has to be more nuanced, a bit like test cricket.

Well Phil Simmons has signed a 3 year contract and so regardless of how poorly the West Indies performs he still gets paid. The job of West Indies coach must be really difficult since no coach in the last decade has managed to make the team perform consistently.
