You can't judge someone based on two games. Viv failed big in his first two games. Dwayne Smith was a star after 2 games.

Hope was correct to play off the back-foot (to almost every ball, he took a step back). One of the coaches must have told him the Brits would try to bounce him out or bowl short. I think he obeyed the coaches so closely that the fuller yorker - the ball that got him - shocked him.
