good first day of test cricket

Brilliant fightback from England when things were looking very dire at 30/4. Root and Stokes were extremely positive and helped build some momentum before lunch which they then carried over into the afternoon session.

A shame to lose Buttler right at the very end. At 30/4, I would have been thrilled with 250. Stokes' performance with the bat has justified his selection. He came in at a time when England could have capitulated.

There aren't enough superlatives to describe Root. Simply magnificent. A shame he missed out on a well deserved ton. Since making his Test debut, only Warner and Sangakkara have scored more runs than Root. 

Mo gets his fifty and then promptly nicks one behind. Key wicket for New Zealand. 363/8.

Good showing from Boult this morning. Broad feathers one behind and New Zealand are one wicket away from limiting England to under 400. 368/9.

Nifty caught and bowled by Henry to wrap up the innings. England 389 all out. 4 wickets a piece for Boult and Henry.

Yep, no-ball called and Wood is robbed of a first wicket through his own fault,

what a shame for him because it was a lovely delivery, angled in and straightening just enough to take the edge
