Two of the three men that were arrested yesterday in connection with the disappearance of four bearings from Uitvlugt Sugar Factory were released today from the Leonora Police Station while one is still in custody pending investigations.
This is according to Public Relations Officer of the Guyana Police Force, Ivelaw Witthaker.
The protest action which continued today, June 20 at the said sugar estate saw the participation of factory workers and several officials from the Guyana Agricultural and Workers Union (GAWU).
According to President of the union, Komal Chand, the union is highly in support of the protest action. Chand told iNews that there should have been a thorough investigation into the matter before any arrests were made.
He noted too that there is nothing GAWU can do to motivate the sugar workers to return to work.
However, during a telephone interview with one of the protesters today, it was revealed that more workers came out in support of the protest action which he said will continue until all the men are released from police custody.
According to reports, on Friday last checks made at the estate revealed that four bearings were missing from the factory and as a result the three men who were responsible for the maintenance of the equipment were handed over to the police
