Democratic Illinois state officials are gearing up to issue driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.

State Senate President John Cullerton is planning to pass a bill in the legislature next week. Gov. Pat Quinn said he’ll sign it, reports the Washington TImes.

If the bill passes, Illinois would become the third state to allow illegal immigrants to get driver's licenses. Washington and New Mexico already allow undocumented immigrants to have licenses.

The proposed bill is supported by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who blocked immigration reform bills in Congress for years.

Mayor Emanuel said in a statement: "I strongly support state legislation that will allow every Chicagoan, regardless of legal status, to enjoy the rights and responsibilities that come with a driver’s license."

Legislators have got to live in the real world, and recognise that denying people of basic dignity and making their lives as difficult as possible isn't going to reduce the amount of illegal immigration - it's simply going to increase the amount of human misery.  This is a great step forward, and let's hope other states follow suit.
