The Quebec Soccer Federation is forbidding turbans on the field of play, despite a directive from the Canadian Soccer Association saying turbans are okay.
For years, Sikh soccer players in Quebec were allowed to wear turbans, but last year the province’s soccer federation began to crack down.
At the time, the federation said it was only following the lead of the international soccer governing body FIFA and its Canadian counterpart.
FIFA still has yet to make a clear ruling on the issue.
Last week, the Canadian Soccer Association asked provincial soccer associations to allow turbans on the field.
But Quebec is still refusing to play ball.
Balpreet Singh, legal counsel for the the World Sikh Organization for Canada, said young Sikhs in Quebec are being unfairly punished.
In the past the organization has called the turban ban a violation of human rights law.
"For them to be excluded, it's really tragic I think,†Singh said.
“It's really breaking down relationships that should be being built during childhood."
The Quebec association has declined to comment on the issue. Representatives did confirm that the policy would be reviewed at an upcoming meeting in the next few months.
But Singh said by then it will be too late for many young soccer enthusiasts.
"Registration for the next season has begun, and if it's going to take several months to be resolved, that means another season will go by where Sikh kids are unable to join their colleagues."
Singh said Quebec is the only province where the turban seems to be a problem for soccer players.

Me a Newf ,live in Brampton ,have found Sikhs to be very honourable people , Let them wear turbans until someone has agood reason why they should not .Seems to me to not present an advantage in sport .

The responsible thing to do would be for the Sikh religious authorities to step in, do the right thing and let their kids dispense with formalities when they directly interfere with their health, well-being and education.
Given that Burqas etc. exist supposedly to defend women's honor by shielding their bodies to men's lustful glances ... there is even less of an argument for turbans on the field than the various Muslim headdresses.

ok first of all, you dont play soccer with a full turban on your head. i played soccer with my hair tied a bit back so my forehead could still be used for headers but not a full turban

Heading the ball is one of the plays used very often in football beside the feet obviously. Apart from the fact that a turban would provide some protection, it would also affect the way the game is played. In some plays the turban would not stay on the player's head, it would come off.
Unless we're talking specifically about very low, recreational levels or young teams in which players may not be allowed excessive contact then I'd say no big deal, they should be allowed to wear it. Major leagues could never implement that same rule since the game is played more aggressively.

Just another example of the Francosupremacist, separatist Partie Quebecois' gang of racists and bigots out to homogenize and francicize (their word) Quebec.

So it's not 'fascist' to require younglings to wear some arbitrary piece of cloth on their heads, 24/7 - even if it conflicts with nearly every facet of their lives?
But it's 'fascists' to suggest that this activity is in fact, problematic.
The true colours of a self-hating leftist.

Fascism never entered my argument.
It's about FREEDOM of religion and MULTICULTURALISM...two things that Pauline Marois and her thugs are strictly against.

In a game that involves the head as an offensive weapon, I'd ban Turbans. If they don't ban them and get a pass, maybe get some spring loaded ones with directional abilities.

What is the logic to banning a turban on a soccer player? It makes 100% sense to ban turbans when you're supposed to wear a helmet (unless they can have a turban with the same protection as an approved helmet), but how is it a problem in soccer? Does it change the head shot enough?

In soccer, you can hit the ball with your head... Obviously the turban would interfere.
