The pitch:
Happy National Rum Day! Yes, it’s an occasion to honor one of the world’s iconic sips, a sugarcane-based spirit that pairs perfectly with Coca-Cola, and is a prime ingredient in a piña colada, a daiquiri or, of course, a rum punch. But when it comes to Legacy , a new rum from Angostura (the same Trinidadian brand behind the beloved bitters), you’ll probably want to forgo the mixing. That’s because this is a rum intended to stand on its own. And it has that stand-alone price of $25,000. To put that into perspective, you could buy around 1,500 bottles of the base-level version of Bacardi, one of the world’s most popular rum brands, for that figure.
Naturally, Legacy isn't intended to be an everyday rum. Not only is it billed as the world’s most expensive, it’s also hailed by Angostura master distiller John Georges as rum’s ideal. “We set out to create the greatest sipping rum ever produced, and we believe we have achieved something that is both unique and unequaled,” he says. It’s also a limited-edition rum: Just 20 bottles have been produced for world-wide distribution, and a brand spokeswoman says that several have already been purchased.
But enough of the hype. What’s actually in the bottle? The brand describes Legacy as a blend of seven “rare and precious rums,” each aged a minimum of 17 years and selected from Angostura’s reserves of more than 80,000 casks. All that time and attention to detail is intended to yield a rum of considerable depth, with a nose of “bruised tropical fruit with some floral notes” (followed by “distinct notes of vanilla, honey and clove” and later, “strong oak with hints of roasted coffee”) and a taste of “sweet, dried fruit” and “nutty and spicy” flavors, the brand says. Oh, and don’t forget the “long” finish with “trailing flavors of orange zest and oak.” But just as important, says master distiller John Georges, is Legacy’s mouth feel. “There’s almost a hint of a syrupy note,” he says. But this is a delicate sort of syrupiness. “It doesn’t cloy,” adds Georges.
As might be expected, you can’t put a $25,000 rum in the same bottle as a $15 one. Legacy comes in a crystal decanter “inspired by an original 1930s Art Deco” design and specially created by Asprey, a British jeweler and luxury goods house that’s been around since 1781. The final touches include a sterling silver topper and a handmade wooden case that’s lined with silk and velvet and covered with soft leath

The reality:
With their complex and often subtly sweet (or even dry) flavors, sipping rums have gotten more attention in recent years. But the most ardent fans of them say you don’t need to spend five figures to enjoy a great one. If anything, highly prized rums tend to be much cheaper than, say, highly prized single-malt Scotches. “Rum is for the most part an undervalued liquor category,” says Noah Rothbaum, author of “The Business of Spirits” and editor in chief of Liquor.com. Rothbaum says great rums can be found for $30 to $45; some he’s partial to in that price range include Zacapa 23 from Guatemala, Appleton Estate 12 Year Old from Jamaica, Cruzan Single Barrel from St. Croix and Barbancourt Reserve Speciale from Haiti. Click to Play If you think of rums as fit only for fruity drinks, Matthew Kronsberg has some aged bottles meant for sipping straight that will come as a refreshing surprise. Photo: F. Martin Ramin for The Wall Street Journal. Other aficionados say you might want to go a notch higher, but that still means rarely spending more than $100. Ian A.V. Burrell, a London-based rum expert who runs the UK Rumfest, points to such rums as Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva from Venezuela and Demerara “El Dorado,” 21-year-old rum from Guyana, in that upper-end category
Which isn't to say that the experts who have tried Angostura’s Legacy — a limited number of samples have been made available to the trade and press — are disappointed in the quality. Despite the long period of aging, it has “more than just wood notes with a lot of sweetness,” says Rothbaum of Liquor.com. Burrell of the UK Rumfest says “it definitely qualifies as a great-tasting rum” and a “well-balanced” one as well. But Burrell admits the price is a turnoff. “I can buy a lot of rum for $25,000 and have a great party,” he adds.
Angostura isn’t denying that Legacy is, in essence, an expensive attention-getter. “It’s a bit of a vanity project,” says brand master distiller John Georges. Which is why the brand points to other “complex” but more traditionally priced sipping rums in its line, including Angostura 1824 (aged for a minimum of 12 years) and Angostura 1919 (aged for a minimum of eight years). Both sell for under $100.
Of course, if you’re still determined to try Legacy but don’t have $25,000 to spare, there is one slightly cheaper option. At London’s Playboy Club, you can buy a shot of Legacy — for $6,000.

Rum and broke, haha!

It sounds delicious but I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between that and a standard bottle of rum.

I would love to taste it to find out but that will never happen.
