Fat cat Rajaratnam lives large in prison: report
s former hedge fund billionaire Raj Rajaratnam living in luxury in a federal prison?
BloombergRaj Rajaratnam, co-founder of Galleon Group
That’s what a report in the New York Post on Tuesday said.
“He’s reigning like a king,†an anonymous source told the newspaper.
Rajaratnam is serving an 11-year prison sentence after being convicted for insider trading and fraud in one of the biggest insider-trading cases brought by the government. The onetime billionaire had appealed his conviction, arguing the use of wiretaps in the case were illegal, and lost.
The case ensnared several former employees, his associates and his brother Rengan Rajaratnam.
The former Galleon hedge fund founder is now living in a cushy prison cell, with a personal “manservant†according to the report.
The prison, Federal Medical Center Devens located in Ayer, Massachusetts, houses the most seriously ill inmates, according to the report.
The one-time high-flier has a private cell with a shared balcony in a coveted part of the prison, usually reserved for the elderly or those who are crippled, according to the report. Some of the perks of the unit are private toilets, adjustable beds and televisions.
“He’s getting special treatment,†the source told the Post.
Raj’s manservant apparently does all kinds of things for the former Wall Street advisor, including cooking for him in a nearby microwave when Raj doesn’t want to walk to the dining hall. The so-called servant wants to be his chauffeur on the outside after Raj bragged about how much he used to pay his real chauffeurs, said the report.
