Veteran cultural activists and Executive Director of the Cultural Development Foundation, Kennedy Samuel says artists need more training in the area of business and economics, especially the expertise on pricing their goods.
He says there are a number of factors, which may influence the price of works of art. Samuels says the arts and economic development go hand in hand.
Samuel is back from Carifesta 11 where exponents of the arts here in
Saint Lucia displayed their unique talent at the cultural festival. The Executive Director says there are many emerging talented artists who need business savvy and acumen to succeed on a world stage. He says one cannot put truly put a price tag on reflecting art; however, prices must be realistic.
He further emphasized that artists must develop their trade and sell themselves in a highly competitive field where realistic pricing is a key ingredient to success.
There are also supply and demand factors as well a cultural mindset, which may not be inherent on the island in relation to the intrinsic value of arts and culture.
Therefore, Samuel advocates a level of indoctrination that encourages Saint Lucians to develop a taste for the arts.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.
