Angoy’s Avenue get playground compliments of Joint Services

Persons residing in the Angoy’s Avenue area now have some where to play and have some recreation. This is following the intervention of the Joint Services which has adopted the Angoy’s Avenue Playground, which was recently commissioned and handed over to the members of the Angoy’s Avenue community.  This is part of the Joint Services new initiative in doing things differently as part of the community relationship which is being done along

with the Safe Neighbourhood Council in the area.
The area which was earmarked a long time ago for the development of the playground, which is located in Timmers Dam, next to the Mount Sinai Nursery school, was reduced to a swamp and overgrown with bushes and was a haven for unsavoury characters.
However since the intervention of the Joint Services the bushes have been cleared and the area land filled.  Trees have been planted and several benches have been erected around the ground which will be fenced soon. A sign has also been erected in the area.
According to the members of the Joint Services their main aim is to develop the space and hand it over to the community. In fact that has already been done, but the services want to maintain a presence in the community, by working closely together in a number of initiatives.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony was Commander Police B Division Assistant Commissioner Brian Joseph.  Mr. Joseph stated that the force is willing to work along with the people in the surroundings in developing the sporting potentials of the community and help to change the stigma of the area. He stated that the force is not only about fighting crime with guns and batons, but has different ways in doing things and is willing to work with any community for the development of youths.
He promised the residents to continue the initiative and join with other members of the Joint Services to further enhance the community.

Also speaking was Divisional Officer of the Guyana Fire Service, Senior Superintendent Compton Sparman-who said that the initiative wasn’t anything new as the Fire Service has worked with and formed partnerships in many communities before.
He pledged to do all he can as long as he remains the officer-in-charge of Berbice to assist what has been started. The Fire Service do not want to be available only when there is a fire or another disaster, but, also in peace and friendly times. The department had earlier donated personnel and machines to assist with the clearing of the ground.
