Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has been made an honorary professor in China.
The title was conferred on her on Wednesday by the China Agricultural University (CAU), where she visited during her official visit to the People’s Republic of China, a release from the Office of the Prime Minister stated yesterday.
Persad-Bissessar said she was deeply humbled and honoured to receive the honorary professorship. She said it came as a major surprise to her, as she only learnt of the award half an hour before arriving at the university, the release added.
The Prime Minister told the students she used to be a university lecturer before entering politics.
During the visit, the Prime Minister witnessed the signing of an agreement between the University of the West Indies, and the China Agricultural University.
On June 1, 2013, during the visit to Trinidad of China’s President Xi Jinping, he initiated the setting up of a Confucius Institute in Trinidad to cement mutual understanding and friendship between the two countries.
Within three months, the UWI-CAU Confucius Institute was launched in St Augustine.
