The People’s National Congress Reform, (PNCR) has opened a book of condolence, in honour of former executive member, Deborah Backer.
The book was opened at the party’s headquarters, Congress Place, Sophia yesterday following a news conference where the party leadership reflected on the personal and public life of the former parliamentarian and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly.
Leader of the main political opposition, A Partnership for National Unity, (APNU), David Granger, said that Backer was respected and will be remembered for her vast and detailed knowledge of standing orders of the National Assembly.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

Granger also described Backer as being deadly serious about eradicating interpersonal violence and particularly protecting women and children.
PNCR executive, Volda Lawrence, noted that as an Attorney, Backer had done “hundreds of pro bono cases†for women, and will be remembered for her openness and frankness as a woman in the forefront.
The party’s General Secretary, Oscar Clarke, recalled Backer’s fiery presence on the campaign hustings and her work at the grassroots level.
The Women and Gender Equality Commission in a press release yesterday extended sincere condolences to Backer’s relatives, friends, colleagues and Party supporters on her passing.
“She will be remembered as a champion for human rights, especially women’s rights…Ms. Backer demonstrated the role that women can play in national politics, by standing up for the advancement of women and their key responsibility in decision-making at the highest levels in our society.â€
Members of Parliament observed a moment of silence in honour of the late Deputy Speaker at yesterday’s sitting of the National Assembly, prior to the reading of this year’s national budget.
PNCR will host a night of reflections on the life of Backer at the West Demerara Secondary School tonight and a wake at the Backers residence, Thursday night.
The party plans to open books of condolence across the regions.
The Deputy Speaker’s funeral is scheduled for Friday and will be preceded by a public viewing at the Parliament Building forecourt before moving across to the St. Andrew’s Kirk Anglican Church for the service.
