Guyana is ranked fourth in suicides per capita worldwide, and has the highest rate amongst South American and Caribbean nations. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Guyana suffers 24.4 suicides per 100,000 persons per year. In effect there are between 150 and 200 suicides per year in a population of about three quarters of a million persons with the majority of deaths generally occurring in Regions Six and Two. For example, in 2011 there were 237 deaths by suicide, or 4.21% of all reported deaths.
About 40% of people who commit suicide in Guyana poison themselves by consuming agricultural pesticides. Hanging is also a significant manner in which suicides are committed. And, in most instances, suicides are associated with alcoholism, domestic abuse, teenage pregnancy and/or relationships issues, especially triangular affairs.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.
