MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — A New York City teenager has been convicted of four counts of manslaughter in the deaths of his friends in a high-speed car crash on a Long Island parkway.
A Nassau County jury returned a partial verdict Friday against Joseph Beer.
The jury deadlocked on the most serious count of aggravated vehicular manslaughter.
Besides manslaughter, the jury convicted the Queens teenager of reckless driving and reckless endangerment. He faces 5-15 years in prison on the manslaughter conviction.
Beer could have faced up to 25 years if he had been convicted of the vehicular homicide count.
Beer was the only survivor of a crash on the Southern State Parkway in October 2012. Police say he was traveling more than 100 mph.
Beer has admitted smoking marijuana prior to the crash.
A prosecutor told a jury at the closing arguments last week that the teen “tempted fate†by getting high on marijuana and driving more than 100 mph before the crash.
Prosecutors contended that Beer had smoked $20 worth of marijuana before speeding at over 100 mph, and was impaired when he crashed.
A Yale School of Medicine psychiatry professor testified that authorities’ drug tests on Beer were not an accurate measurement of his state since he was a chronic pot user.
The defense team maintained that it was speed — not pot — that led to the fatal crash.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

Well, this is quite a story. One that has me feeling many emotions. The first thought that came to my mind was the story of the teen who murdered 6 people - I think - some months ago in a drunk driving accident in Texas. I remember his attorney was able to argue a defense of the teen suffering from Affluenza. So in a story last week I read the teen's treatment is at a high scale rehab facility where tax payers will pay the bill. It was such a slap in the face to the families of the decease.
I don't think closure will ever come from any family member who lost a love one in a senseless accident that could have been avoided. This NY teenager must pay the price for a decision he made back in 2012. I am on the highway all the time and I come across some jerk speeding well over 100 mph and one time they almost collided with me. I feel he should have been convicted on the most serious charge of vehicular homicide as well. But I wasn't in the jury room and I didn't see all of the evidence so I really can't rely on my instinct of how I feel at the moment.
