Iraqi security forces battled insurgents targeting the country's main oil refinery and claimed to regain partial control of a city near the Syrian border Wednesday, trying to blunt a weeklong offensive by militants who diplomats fear may have abducted some 100 foreign workers.
The campaign by the al-Qaida-inspired Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant has raised the specter of the sectarian warfare that nearly tore the country apart in 2006 and 2007 and the doubts that followed the 2003 U.S.-led invasion now haunt those trying to decide how to respond.
U.S. President Barack Obama will brief lawmakers later Wednesday at the White House on what options his wary country could take.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, meanwhile, struck an optimistic tone after soldiers abandoned their posts in the wake of the initial offensive, promising his nation would teach the attackers a "lesson."
"We have now started our counteroffensive, regaining the initiative and striking back," al-Maliki said.
Al-Maliki's relatively upbeat assessment came as the military claimed its forces regained parts of the strategic city of Tal Afar near the Syrian border, which Islamic State fighters captured Monday. Its closeness to the Syrian border strengthens the Islamic State's plan to carve out an "Islamic emirate" stretching across the Iraq-Syria border.
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.

If the Iraqi President is optimistic, that's good. The downside is the lost of lives in the midst of such optimism. In American media, Republicans will use this as leverage to paint President Obama as weak for "abandoning Iraq." It's just talking points. I think the Iraqi military are more than capable of reigning in this terror. People need to realize these insurgents and terrorists always existed in Iraq. They now see an opening and are seizing the moment so to speak, but it won't last long. I think those who want to blame President Obama need to realize the long and corrupt history between Iraq, Iran, and America. It is a history that involved funding these dictators to use terror against their own people. And the person who started such a trend was none other than Conservative Hero Ronald Reagan. Last, these insurgents are being funded. By who? We don't know. What we need to know is who is giving them funds to continue senseless violence against innocent civilians and bring them to the court of law for persecution.

Seriously Bro. It should be legislated that the children of politicians who support and declare war should be enlisted to fight.
You'll see how quickly the cry for "give peace a chance" will ring out loud and proud in Washington.
