Testing his goodwill among the younger generations, Pope Francis told an audience at a drug enforcement conference in Rome on Friday that he opposes the legalization of recreational drugs. He addressed the debate happening in countries from the U.S. to Uruguay saying that efforts to legalize drugs "are not only highly questionable from a legislative standpoint, but they fail to produce the desired effects." Francis has frequently spoken about the perils and "evil" of drugs

The Pope has the perspective that any substances used to alter a person's mind in the type of self indulgences are evil. It is considered evil because it takes a person's focus off of helping God to make earth a better place.
I argue that often self indulgences help people to relax and rejuvenate, so they are better capable to face another stressful day and then work at making the world a better place. Only Jesus was strong enough to face every day without wine. He was comforted knowing He was the son of God. Me, I need added comforts and securities.

I think I understand Francis concerns but what does practice reveal ::confused::
there are locations where drugs abuse was such a social problem it was out of hand, so the authorities legalized its use and the results have been been very positive.
it appears one the taboo is removed from drugs and the focus becomes treatment and understanding of cause and remedy drug abuse is reduced and the the society gets a hold of the problem.
I cant agree with the Pope despite what appear to be genuine concern on his part. Marijuana for instance is a huge issue while the plant itself offer great benefit to humanity in so many areas of life we are not fully aware yet of its over all potential. we must legalise its use to realise all the potential benefits of its development
