Prime Minister Narendra Modi has drawn big criticism from the United States on account of the firm stand India took at the World Trade Organization negotiations, insisting that its concerns about food security needed to be accommodated if India were to go along with the so-called trade facilitation agreement. Overnight the smile has vanished from Uncle Sam’s face.
Washington was taken by surprise. Its estimation was that the Modi government in its anxiety to start a fresh page in US-Indian ’strategic partnership’ would climb down at the last minute and the remarks by secretary of state John Kerry in the run-up to the visit to India implicitly hinted at such anticipation. Kerry’s uncharacteristic outburst while in Delhi alleging that Modi was sending the “wrong message” also suggests a sense of let-down. But how the Barack Obama administration could have got such a notion regarding the Modi government’s DNA is anybody’s guess.
What is so “wrong” about the PM’s decision to convey the “message” the he puts primacy on India’s vital interests? Isn’t that what an elected leader of democratic India supposed to do? Is it any different from what US president Barack Obama himself would do if American interests are at stake? Kerry’s reported remarks, here, were undiplomatic. He should not have ordered his minions to publicize that he “challenged” Modi, because the Indian prime minister is not his counterpart.
