They've got it backwards. A man will be bad luck to her. So if the dog means that she can't have a man, then that's a good thing. They did her a favor, because at least the dog can be her true friend, whereas a slave master could never.

I could say this is the craziest story I've heard today however it sorts of shows the direction the world is going. There is very little control left in the world.
