Funeral held for US soldier who died in Korean War

INGLEWOOD, California (AP) — A U.S. soldier who died as a prisoner of war during the Korean War is finally being laid to rest.

Army Sgt. Lee H. Manning, whose remains were recently identified, has received full military honors in a service Friday at Inglewood Park Cemetery near Los Angeles.

Manning was just 20 years old when he enlisted in 1950 and trained as a medic.

Returning POWs reported Manning was captured by Chinese forces during a 1950 battle and died six months later from medical neglect.

The government notified his family this summer that DNA testing confirmed the identity of remains provided by North Korea.

The funeral included presentations by representatives of South Korea and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Manning's sister, Carrie Elam, told reporters, "My heart is very full."
