Nearly five million people living illegally in the US can escape deportation under sweeping changes to the immigration system.
"Come out of the shadows and get right with the law," urged President Barack Obama in a televised address.
Republicans say the action, without Congress, is beyond his authority and relations will now be poisoned.
There are about 11m illegal immigrants in the US and this year children coming across the border prompted a crisis.
Under the plan, undocumented parents of children who are US citizens or legal residents will be able to apply for work permits lasting three years.
Only parents who have lived in the US for five years will qualify - about 3.7m people are estimated to fit this criteria.

[color=rgb(51, 51, 51)]Republicans reacted with fury and said such a move "poison the well" on a number of other issues.

There really is no feasible way to stop illegal immigrants from coming in. The border with Mexico is too long and there a thousands of miles of entry points from Miami to California. What is the US going to do ? Build a wall. So many people don't leave after their visa expires. I know because these people beg my father for employment so they can get a green card. While I don't agree with Obama making it easier on them when they broke the law, what can the government really do?

LMAO. No pal my dad owns 3 grocery stores in NY. Small businesses which survived against big companies like Walmart and Shop and Stop and Costco because he is business savvy and has a sound financial mind. He knows how to get people to come back. He hypnotizes ignorant fools like you into buying a 6 pack of Corona and a carton of whatever nancy boy cigs you smoke for 1.5x the price you would pay at the retail chain across the street.

These past two years at least one group of marginalized pro-immigrant group began focusing on President Obama. They knew they could eventually shame him into changing policy via executive action. Their strategy worked.
Now, just as expected the republicans decry being cheated the legitimate political process of addressing immigration reform. The president's answer was, "Pass a bill!" They still have the opportunity to make legally address reform.
President Reagan gave amnesty to illegal immigrants. He repeatedly did that in 1987. That proves that those pesky Republicans are using a double standard to criticize President Obama. Additionally, the current president's executive order is only temporary; therefore, he did not grant amnesty like Reagan had.
