Barack Obama: "Our immigration system is broken and everybody knows it"

The president told the nation that what he is proposing is not amnesty.

"What I'm describing is accountability - a commonsense, middle ground approach," he said.

Although the plan will allow millions to work, it won't offer a path to citizenship or entitle them to the same benefits as Americans, he said.

"If you're a criminal, you'll be deported. If you plan to enter the US illegally, your chances of getting caught and sent back just went up."

The plan will also expand a 2012 programme that defers deportation for young people brought to the country illegally as children.

Also in the speech:

shifting additional resources to the Mexico border to increase arrests of illegal crossers
streamlining the immigration court process to ease the backlog
making national security threats and serious criminals the highest priorities for deportation
a plea to Republicans to pass a broader immigration bill that is a "comprehensive fix"
The plan reflects "the guidance [Mr Obama] has received from the Secretary of Homeland Security and the Attorney General about everything he could do under the existing law", a senior administration official said on Thursday.

"It's entirely consistent with the way previous presidents have exercised their executive authority."

(Reuters) - U.S. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner said on Friday that President Barack Obama's executive action on immigration had sabotaged chances for bipartisan legislation and vowed to lead a fight to block the order.

Republicans remain split on the best course of resistance to Obama's action easing the threat of deportation for some 4.7 million undocumented immigrants, but conservative groups were already pulling together legal strategies to challenge it.

"With this action, the president has chosen to deliberately sabotage any chance of enacting bipartisan reforms that he claims to seek. And as I told the president yesterday, he's damaging the presidency itself," Boehner told reporters.

"We're working with our members and looking at the options available to us," he said. "But I will say to you, the House will, in fact, act."

It has been just like the critics have lamented. Those Republicans weren't going to do anything anyway! Policy strategists have placed a laser focus on attempting to change the minds of House and Senate Republicans. It was like talking to a brick wall.

These past two years at least one group of marginalized pro-immigrant group began focusing on President Obama. They knew they could eventually shame him into changing policy via executive action. Their strategy worked.

Now, just as expected the republicans decry being cheated the legitimate political process of addressing immigration reform. The president's answer was, "Pass A Bill!" They still have the opportunity to make legally address reform.

I sympathize with many who want to get out of impossible binds they're in within their country. Like with that lady who tried to escape Cuba with her little boy. She died on the boat, but the boat made it to America, and Castro demanded the boy's return.

I felt for them because the mother died trying to escape messed up conditions for herself and her son. I mean, realistically, it's easy for anybody in an advantageous nation to sit back in safety and say: "We shouldn't let foreigners in."

But being real, what if it were you?

What if were any of us?

Say for instance, if your country had a wipeout earthquake. I doubt that any survivors wouldn't be looking at the next country to migrate to, and would appreciate being turned away. Don't get me wrong, I agree that there should be strong protection from foreign invasion, that people can't enter just because they want to. But that we should have compassion for those in dire need.

That's all I'm saying.

It has also come to my attention that Reagan gave amnesty to illegal or undocumented immigrants back in 1987. Therefore, the Republican party crying about President Obama acting in similar fashion to address immigration reform smacks of racism.

Gotta agree with this one.  In the late  1990's I was the safety coordinator for a large construction company that built high rise buildings.  One of the little extra jobs they gave me was to check the I-9 paperwork for the Mexican workers on our sites since I traveled to all the sites each week.  We had a strong suspicion that a lot of the paperwork was forged, but you know what? It looked legit, and If we hadn't of hired them, most of the high rise contruction in South Florida in the mid to late 90's simply wouldn't have happened, because American workers just wouldn't take jobs pouring concrete at $12-15 per hour, which was pretty good money at the time.  They would rather work in the AC at Mickey D's for half that.

If that's true, then most Americans are lazy.  ::LOL::

Though it's hard to believe that an American man would prefer lazy work paying half of more strenuous work. 12 to 15 bucks an hour is still good money and more than what many are making.
