Mental illness in U.S. adults widespread

Nearly one in five American adults -- 43.8 million people -- experienced some type of diagnosable mental illness last year. The latest findings, from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration's (SAMHSA) 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, show just how widespread such issues really are.

More than 15 million people in the U.S. over the age of 18 suffered from an episode of major depression in 2013. More than nine million reported having serious thoughts of suicide, while 1.3 million actually attempted suicide. SAMHSA said these figures were comparable to the numbers for 2012.

Major depression was also a problem for about one in 10 adolescents ages 12 to 17, or about 2.6 million teens. Only about 38 percent of them received treatment.

Even though mental illness is now spoken about more openly and recognized as a common, often treatable condition, many of those who suffered from it failed to get treatment.

About 68 percent of adults with serious mental illness got some type of mental health care last year, as did just under half of those with "moderate" illness.

"It is a serious issue that millions of Americans are needlessly affected by mental illness when they can get effective treatment to restore their well-being," SAMHSA Administrator Pamela S. Hyde said in a statement. "Now more than ever, people can get the help they need to recover from mental disorders and live full, active lives - they just need to take the first step and seek help."

According to the survey, the most common reasons people who needed mental health treatment did not get it was that they thought they couldn't afford it. Others said they thought they could handle the problem on their own, or didn't know where to go for help.

SAMHSA has an online guide to help anyone who needs it find treatment programs near them. It also runs a 24-hour, toll-free information line at 1-800-662-HELP (4357).

Has anybody considered what an impact some of the agrichemicals, genetic tinkering of our crops, mercury in our seafood and all the bisphenols that leach out of the plastic bottles we drink our Perrier and soda from have on our brains? That's just to name five. I would find it very hard to believe that chemical insults from our environment have nothing to do with our skyrocketing rates of mental illness. One poster below mentioned sociopaths. It wouldn't surprise me at all to find there is a connection between the stuff we eat, drink and breathe and the incidence of sociopathy either.

It is depressing just living this American life. You run as fast as you can trying to keep ahead of the game.

Financial issues can weigh you down. Your house it not worth what you mortgaged it for. It has been six years, and your mortgage is still under water. Economists predict that if may be another five years before you can break even.
You have to work past retirement age just to meet previous expectations of retiring without worry.
The neighborhood crime is getting worse. Property crime has skyrocketed, and so has your property insurance. More Money!

I wouldn't call depression mental illness.

It's a spiritual condition adversely affecting the soul, but it's not a mental illness. In my opinion, there's really no such thing as mental illness. Unless there's a tumor growing in the brain or something, there's really no mental illness.

I think that we just suffer from life disappointments and hurt emotions in reaction to it. This doesn't qualify as mental illness.

It is a paradox though is it not ? The most powerful country in the world, the best place to live (supposedly), the place where everyone else in the world wants to be is afflicted with one of the highest percentages of psychiatric disorders.

Although to be fair in the 3rd world countries some of these are just swept under the rug or accepted as is. For example if you talk about OCD in India they will look at you like "WTF" even though in the US it is a documented disorder and a very well known psychiatric condition. Depression is recognized in India as I believe it is a universal human condition but I don't know how many take any medication for it. Another thing is that while in the US everything is documented, in the poorer countries this type of data is not collected.

The thing about America I think that most people don't understand is that it only offers liberty. Freedom to be yourself. But freedom to be yourself doesn't mean that you're home free. Which stands to reason why depression is a staple of the greatest country in the world. Technically speaking, what differentiates America from third world countries is liberty and laws. America outlaws things that are legal in third world countries, so a man can't legally batter or kill his wife for not giving him sex or not kissing his butt. Children can't be legally copulated with or sold. And so on...

Though America still has the mentality of third world countries, which is a slave mentality. Americans have freedom that they do nothing meaningful with and throw away living as free slaves. And when I speak of slaves I don't mean just black people. The majority of the entire continent has the same slave mentality as third world countries. The only difference is liberty and laws.

As for instance, Ray Rice battered his wife in an elevator and the wife said it's our life. Okay, the difference is that in India Ray would be within his legal rights but in America he got booted from the NFL. In either locale, the female is receptive to and accepting of the abuse. What it shows is that even when rights and protections are offered, the free slave finds no use for it.

So the American people are not what makes America so great. It's America's liberty, laws, and opportunities. The American people themselves are out of it.
