Government says it will soon start constructing an alternative link between Diamond and Eccles on the East Bank of Demerara, as part of long-term strategies to ease congestion in the area.
During his New Year message to the nation, President Donald Ramotar also disclosed that a feasibility study, that will see a bypass linking the East Bank of Demerara to the East Coast, is completed.
The projects have been in the pipeline for a while now and would spell good news for users of the East Bank corridor who daily have to contend with long lines.
With regards to the alternative link between Diamond and Eccles, several of the housing schemes between the two areas already have roads that connect them.
The alternative link is expected to start within the first half of the year.
One can literally start driving from Eccles through the housing schemes there to Herstelling.
“In addition, the feasibility study for the East Coast – East Bank bypass road has been completed and we are discussing next steps to advance this project. This will catalyze US$65 million in investment, building 20 kilometres of roads and supporting infrastructure,†the President disclosed of the East Coast link. That project is expected to link Eccles to the back of Ogle.
The East Bank Demerara public road is the most critical link in the country, leading to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Linden, the hinterland, and West Demerara.
Meanwhile, with regards to Government’s housing program, the President noted that entire new communities have emerged where once the land lay wasted and unoccupied.
“Tens of thousands of Guyanese families’ have realised the dream of home ownership. Gone are the days when this dream was out of the reach of the average hard working Guyanese.â€
The housing sector has seen “impressive†growth over the past five years. “From 2009 to 2014 the budget allocated to the sector has grown by 400%. In 2009, the Ministry was implementing 51 projects, now in 2014; there are 170 projects under implementation. The sector has been a boon for job creation, directly creating 3,500 jobs in 2014, a figure that is projected to grow to 4,250 in 2015.†According to Ramotar, his administration has also launched a “one thousand†home initiative for working class families. “The young professionals’ pilot programme was successfully completed and a new era in urban planning is beckoning.â€
Always tell someone how you feel because opportunities are lost in the blink of an eye but regret can last a lifetime.
