Drivers in parts of the Northeast were urged by officials to stay home on Sunday to avoid dangerous conditions caused by icy rain, which had prompted the closure of several bridges in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and caused a fatal pile-up.
At least two people were killed in a 50-vehicle pile-up on Interstate 76 in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, caused by extremely slick roads, according to NBC Philadelphia.
Several bridges were also closed, as crews worked to salt the slippery arteries, according to the Delaware River Port Authority.
"Stay home," New Jersey State Police warned on Twitter, noting that 366 accidents had been reported.
Icy conditions in New York City, as well as in areas north and west, weren't expected to improve until the temperatures went up in the afternoon, according to NBC New York. A swath from Pennsylvania up to Maine was under a freezing rain advisory, according to the National Weather Service. Most of the areas spanning the eight northeastern states could expect up to an inch of rain by the end of Sunday, according to Weather.com.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, more ice and heavy fog caused a pile-up involving 70 cars and 17 semi-trucks Saturday night, according to Oregon State Police. At least 12 people were injured in the crash, police said in a statement. But a pick-up truck driver, whose Chevy was crush between two semi-trucks escaped the catastrophe with only flesh wounds to his head, according to NBC affiliate KTVB.

Kaleb Whitby, 27, who miraculously escaped with minor injuries, was sandwiched in his pickup truck between two trailers in the Baker City crash. The photographer, Sergi Karplyuk, helped the man out of his car. Whitby's injuries only required two band-aids and ice.

Hundreds of NJDOT crews are spreading salt throughout the state. If you have to travel, be careful and drive slowly. Stay home if you can.
