2 men caught shoplifting alcohol an hour apart in Bayonne: cops

BAYONNE -- Two men were caught shoplifting alcohol an hour apart at a ShopRite earlier this week, according to Bayonne police.

On Sunday at 7:11 p.m., store security at the ShopRite at 583 Ave. C saw a 35-year-old Bayonne man attempt to leave the store without paying for two bottles of Courvoisier Cognac worth a total of $74.88, Bayonne Police Capt. Robert Geisler said.

After security stopped the man, police arrived and arrested him on a charge of shoplifting, Geisler said. The 35-year-old was later released on a summons.

Just a little over an hour later, security stopped a 43-year-old Bayonne man from shoplifting a bottle of vodka worth $15.78, Geisler said. When police arrived, a search of the man's record also turned up an outstanding no-bail warrant out of Hudson County Superior Court.

The 43-year-old was arrested and taken to the Hudson County jail on a bail of $5,000 with a 10 percent cash option on the shoplifting charge, Geisler said.

A police report about the man's arrest didn't describe the nature of the outstanding warrant, he said.
