The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) is quite aware of the anxiety that prevails at this time in relation to the final declaration of the 2015 elections results. GECOM, in a statement this afternoon (Friday), wishes to inform the public that it shares that anxiety but is constrained by the legal requirements, which it has to observe.Relative to the process of declaring the results, those results have now been declared by the respective Returning Officers for the ten Electoral Districts. However, parties may raise objections by midday of the day after the last of the ten declarations.
For that reason, since the last declaration was made this morning, Friday May 15, 2015, the Commission has to wait until noon on Saturday May 16, 2015 before it can pronounce on a final declaration. This is the law.
The Commission is therefore asking the public to bear with it until midday of Saturday May 16, 2015, before it advises on the next stage of the declaration of result

The Commonwealth Observer Group in its preliminary findings has congratulated the Guyana Elections Commission on its managing of the electoral process however it noted that the present legal framework was not conducive to a faster result declaration and it also raised concerns about inequitable access to the state media.
[/size]Head of the Mission Kate Wilkinson yesterday stated that “I think it would be preferable to have a smaller interval between the closing of polls and the declaration of the official results but I understand the larger framework was not entirely conducive to that and at the end of the day Gecom is operating within the law…and they have certain constraints within the legal frameworkâ€. She was speaking during a press briefing at Cara Lodge.

THE emergence of more and more information, backed up by documented evidence, led President Donald Ramotar to again request that the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) do, if not a total recount, a recount of 22 ballot boxes where irregularities were noticed.GECOM has reportedly agreed to do the recount and the President and his team called for this to be done in the presence of party representatives and electoral observer missions.Until the recount is completed, the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) has called on the Chief Elections Officer (CEO) not to make any disclosures regarding the final results of the 2015 General and Regional elections.The President is urging supporters and the nation as a whole “to wait a bit longer to have democracy prevail.â€The Head of State stressed that the recount of 22 ballot boxes where irregularities in the electoral process were flagged will be “worth the wait.â€
