www.inewsguyana.com] – As the local United States Embassy celebrated America’s 239th Anniversary of Independence, calls were made for Guyana to follow in the nation’s footprints as it relates to legislation to protect differently abled individuals and for some amount of reform to the current legislation surrounding same sex relations.
US Charge d’ Affaires Bryan Hunt, at a reception held at the Marriott International Hotel on Thursday, July 02, pointed out that incidentally, this year marks 25 years since America enacted its Disabilities Act and it is hoped that similar advances will be made by Guyana in the near future.
“This landmark legislation prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life…we are hopeful that the government of Guyana can join us in our commitment to ensure that all persons, disabled or not have equal access and equal opportunity to live full and independent lives,†said Hunt.

As it relates to the recent ruling on gay marriage in the US, Hunt implored that Guyana and other allies of the US should also take examples from the USA.
“It is my fervent hope that in the coming years other allies such as Guyana, will decide to join us in the fight for human rights for all including those of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities,†Hunt stated.
Meanwhile, he also pointed out that in the last 12 months, the US has issued some 30,000 non-immigrant visas to Guyanese. Acting President, Moses Nagamootoo congratulated America on its milestone, noting that Guyana is relatively young in comparison to America.
The Acting President said that Guyana still has a far way to go in relation to growth and development; however he is optimistic that the country will reach its full potential.
“We too are optimistic that we can achieve greatness when we harness the creativity of our people and out vast riches,†said Nagamootoo.
