TORONTO - Land development in Ontario has become a huge drain on the province’s wetlands.
In a discussion paper released this week, the Ministry of Natural Resources calls for the development of a strategic plan for Ontario wetlands.
“Wetlands continue to be threatened by land conversion, alterations to natural water levels, invasive species, pollution and climate change,†the discussion paper says.
The plan would outline steps to be taken over the next 15 years to improve wetland conservation, including the possible adoption of a “no net loss†policy that would require any destruction of wetlands to be offset by rehabilitation of lands elsewhere.
