GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) – In a bid to resolve the row between Guyana and Venezuela, President David Granger has expressed willingness to speak with his counterpart Nicolas Maduro when world leaders head to the General Assembly of the United Nations.

Foreign Minister Carl Greenidge told reporters that “there is room for discussion in an appropriate forum and if that is in the margins of the UN or anywhere else then that’s not a problem.”

However, Greenidge said there was no proposal for the leaders to hold talks.  “We are not meeting one-on-one. There is no proposal to meet one-on-one and I don’t know what would be the objective of such a one-on-one,” said the Foreign Minister.

Maduro said that the Guyana-Venezuela controversy would be discussed at a upcoming Latin American meeting. Venezuela continues to claim the Essequibo Region, saying that the 1899 Arbitral Tribunal  Award was concocted in favour of then British Guiana.

Guyana is pushing for UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to order a judicial settlement of the controversy over the ruling of the 1899 Arbitral Tribunal Award that settled the land-border controversy between the two countries. Guyana is expected to reiterate that position when Ban's envoy visits Georgetown "soon."

Earlier this week, Maduro said he asked the UN Secretary General to mediate in the border dispute.

Followng the meeting on Tuesday, Maduro told reporters that  “We will continue to work through diplomatic means....we will overcome the provocations and aggressions of Granger.”

A statement from the UN's Media office said the Secretary General took note of  Maduro’s views regarding the Guyana-Venezuela border controversy and reiterated his assurances of the readiness of the UN Secretariat to discuss the way forward with both Governments”.

A bitter row erupted between the two countries ever since the American oil exploration company, ExxonMobil, announced in May that it had found a “significant” deposit of high quality crude oil offshore Guyana.

Venezuela reacted by unilaterally delineating its maritime boundary to take in all of the Atlantic waters off the Essequibo Coast  which includes the location of the oil exploration rig.

The dire economic situation in Venezuela, which has sparked dozens of riots because of the shortages of food and other essential items, has turned President Nicolas Maduro into a drowning man clutching to a straw for survival.

President of Guyana David Granger, who is himself a historian, made is clear to a United States security forum recently, that if Venezuela makes good on its threat, Guyana as a nation would virtually cease to exist. In my view, President Maduro's call for face-to-face talks with President Granger would accomplish nothing. If Guyana agrees to such a meeting, it would be sending a signal to the world that Guyana is willing to discuss the future of its sovereign territory. There is nothing to discuss. The only option is to take the controversy to the International Court of Justice for a final judicial affirmation of the validity of the 1899 arbitral award.

what the hell am I seeing here at all ::confused:: ::confused:: ::confused::

that is the most unsophisticated response I have seen on this issue yet ::confused:: ::confused:: ::confused:: ::confused::

what are its precedents sine 1999 and the rise of Chavez and Venezuala Bolivarianism.  Chavez/Maduro put together and maintain regional programs that help Guyana most of all in the region.  it is Guyana who was most in need of such help..and Jamaica too but Guyana most of all.

look at what Guyana has gotten from Venezuela since 1999!

what has Venezuela been to Guyana since then..not a good neighbor ::confused::

it is Guyana in the circumstances been the jackass, narrow minded impse in the brew all thngs considered.  and worse now it is Guyana that has lent itself to the americans to use without fetter as instrument of Venezualan destabilization..which is going to destabilize the whole region and bring seriously hard times to all in the near about

Guyana has no people and no matter what will not appreciably increase population in the next 50/100 years. Guyana has no hope at all of ever holding on to the land in question in reality.  the only reason for that land still being in dispute is that Venezuala does not have the people to occupy it otherwise they would have long done so.

relative to that land I see Guyana like a basketball team with an expiring contract of a star player they are going to loose.  they have to make the best deal they can make to get something out of it while they still can. that is what that situation is.

american wont always defend Guyana.  Guyana is a defenseless, third world country full of people america traditionally destroy. currently Guyana corresponds to american need to destroy an ideological formation it finds threatening, as example to people in the world america holds in thrall and and wants them to stay captive.

allyh impse!  remember the british invaded Guyana and left a dictator to rule allyuh..why ::confused::

IT WAS BECAUSE CHEDDI JAGAN PUT INTO GUYANA THE VERY SAME PROCESS THAT CHAVEZ SUCCEEDED IN INSTITUTING IN VENEZUEALA AND MADE IT WORK.. SO MUCH SO THAT VENEZUELA  MADE HUGE DEVELOPMENTAL GAINS OVER THE PAST 16 YEARS.

THE AMERICANS ARE LOOKING TO SMASH THAT NOW...JUST AS THEY SMASHED JAGAN BACK IN THE DAY.  JUST AS THEY SMASHED GADDAFI AND LIBYA RECENTLY

so what does that mean then? it means that as long as Guyana accepts ir poverty and backwardness its good for america.  but anytime Guyana decides to move forward, to develop itself, Guyana will be smashed  just like Ven is about to be smashed

the idea and point here is that Guyana should always have been seeking a deal with Ven based on its reality relative to that land..to get something out of it for Guyanese.  the Chinese have trillions of dollars available for investment all over the planet.  Ven wud have made deals with Guyana to begin to develop the resources in that region with money for Guyana.

Guyana cud have left the nationalist determination of that land open while it developed and populated..while building up a real Guyana nation in the rest, strong and as powerful and as populous as it can be made.  bring all Guyanese back home...attract them with the proper and prosperous development that would be underpinned by new oil wealth.

such a Guyana in 20-30 years time would be far better able, more capable of dealing with Ven than this nonsense that exists now, creating a serious long term problem for Guyana with a strong and growing neighbor.

remember you cant depend on anyone to defend you interest.  at some point Guyana must be able to deal with its own defense and that is what Guyana leaders ought to be about, building Guyana's future..not pussyfooting with america against a powerful regional neighbor

america real power in the world is in sharp decline.  the day when america cannot project its power can be dislimned on the horizon.  it is politically stupid to attach one's boat in this way to american power.

on top of that,  racist american has no interest in the Guyanese people, does not care whether they live or die..will help them to die..indeed are helping towards that objective now as we speak.  they are the ones who put Forbes in ayuh rarse and kept him in power for so long

american does not care about the Guyanese people.  america has an interest in the region save profit from its natural resources and they put Granger there as PM to help them deal with their Ven problem.  Granger is the donkey  in the mix..a sell out and lackey who will be the death of Guyana.

and allyuh watch out.  allyuh see america running out of fresh wartuh.  Guyana have plenty. Canada too but they may not want to deplete canada juss yet.  indeed deh have to deplete canada, just remove the border line and make it one country.  or just leave it  and make one country in fact if not in written word,  why go to all the trouble

but if they have to come to Guyana fuh wartuh deh taking all..leave a depleted  polluted ecological disaster fuh ayuh smart  rarse.

allyuh have all the evidence allyuh need to make informed opinions about the situation..yet allyuh keep making the wrong choice. just remember Mapoui when the boom is lowered in allyuh skunt.

as far as I see given Guyana's population and its quality of leadership Guyana as we know it has no future. none at all. Guyana will be taken over by the states and raped for awhile before it loses allits power..most unlikely of all scenarios. most likely Guyana will be absorbed by Ven or Brasil..more likely Brasil

it would take seriously nationalistic orientation and ideology like that of a Rodney to save Guyana. Leadership like the PNC and PPP people like Jhag, Ramotar and Granger are totally not up the task of making a Guyanese nation on that land, that can keep itself going indefinitely.  and this dance that allyuh have entered with the americans will speed up that process..of Guyanese disintegration and absorption into a bigger entity

this opinion makes no sense!

if Maduro wants to talk then Granger shud talk.  what else is there.  and Maduro wont invade Guyana.  what sign of weakness can Granger possibly send to Maduro?
Guyana is weak period.  who cyar see that!

it is best that they both agree on something then take that to the court or appropriate international body as frame. no one party should go there alone.  to give an international body a chance to make a decision without the other party present is to give the USA opportunity to make vast trouble

if both develop a frame or go all the way and negotiate a settlement then that benefits Guyana.  man talk about Guyana sovereign territory when as far as I see the old agreement was a farce, forced by the British in Guyana's favor.
based on that I don't see how Guyana is going to get all that it wants at the end of this.  any compromise would necessarily involve some loss of territory..which from a west indian point of view is not good at all.

which is why were I Granger I would do the following:  the major weakness in the Guyana case is that the land is now occupied.  Guyana a wants to keep the land but Guyana does not occupy and cannot occupy has no people, can do nothing with the land.

Occupation is 90% of the case, or legitimacy etc and in 100+ years, since the disputed treaty Guyana has not added even so much as ten thousand people to the land.  Guyanese leave the country in fact and flock up the world.  there must be at least half a million/million Guyanese in other lands, more leaving each day fleeing the failure that Guyanese society is.

no international arbitration is going to take Guyana seriously all things being equal.  the reality is that Guyana is barely a nation..just a collection of people sitting on a huge land space with which they can nothing, contemplates nothing at all relative to the land.  they just want it, to keep it. history is very unsympathetic to that sort of thing.

so I would bring in the west indies on this..CARICOM..develop an understanding based on development and people-ing of Guyana and actually begin to effect that plan.  and on that basis bring the rest of the west indies in on talks with Maduro..negotiations if you will.

that would change the whole ball game..legitimize Guyana's position, expand its bases hugely..a position Maduro must take very seriously for now he has all the west indies to deal with..nations whose support Venezuela needs in its war with America..in CELAC and OAS etc.

all all ah allyuh Guyanese doing is sitting on allyuh backsides and talking crap based on right..as it might does not make right.  and if you have no might you have to eat crap all ways in this world.

all that keeps Guyana in place and in the same piece is american opposition to Venezuela's left wing government and its program.  Britain wanted to keep its empire intact so it shewed off the Venezuelan right wing when they wanted to take Guyana.  I don't think america will stop the Venezuela right wing if they get back the power in Venezuela and decides to take Guyana.

in that case allyuh done..finished.  so allyuh better pray Maduro wins again..which at this point seems unlikely.  so if Maduro calls for talks now allyuh better listen and move before he loses power and the right wing comes back.  with oil involved they wont leave allyuh alone.

and remember that allyuh black.  American loves its Latin white Gringo rightwingers and much prefer to deal with them than such as Idiot Granger, who, historian or not does not really know his history the way he behaves.  he is a nhigger..and all Guyanese black as far as america concerned so is wood fuh all.

that Granger even suggesting he will talk with Maduro suggests that he may be waking up to reality, which is good thing indeed.  but time running out.  he must move his silly rarse real quick... or all is lost.  he have the remainder of Maduro's term to move..2-3 years at most
