Mississauga man stabbed, half-brother charged with murder

A Mississauga man is dead and his half-brother has been charged with second-degree murder after a fight at a Mississauga apartment early Saturday.

Peel police were called to a unit of a highrise building at 2111 Roche Ct., near Erin Mills Pkwy and Queen Elizabeth Way, around 1:30 a.m. after reports that a man inside was not breathing.

Several adults were inside the unit when an altercation broke out and a man was stabbed, police said. Someone inside the apartment called police. When officers arrived, they found a 49-year-old man with stab wounds and without vital signs. He was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

Police have identified him as Wayne Croft, from Mississauga.

The victim’s half-brother, Charles Croft, 46, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. A Peel police spokesperson said there are no other suspects.

“There were several other adults that were present at the time of the incident,” said Peel Police Const. Lilly Fitzpatrick. “They all remained on scene, as did the accused, and they are being interviewed by investigators today.”

The police would not provide any more details about the altercation.

As of Saturday afternoon, forensic investigators remained on scene at the apartment unit. According to police, the unit was not the victim’s home.

Police spent Saturday canvassing residents of the highrise. Many residents first heard about what happened when the police knocked at their door.

A woman named Meya, who was visiting family in a unit on the second floor, called the incident “scary”, but said she didn’t hear anything.

“I don’t know what was happening, we were all sleeping,” said Meya, who refused to give her last name. She came into the building last night around 10 p.m., and there were kids playing outside. “It was a normal evening.”

Meya had just flown in from Korea, where she’s been living for two years. Her family had recently moved into the building, and this was her first visit.

“All of this is new and scary,” she said.

Charles Croft was scheduled to appear in a Brampton court later Saturday.
