Authorities have confirmed that the aircraft wing found on Reunion Island is from the missing MH370 plane.
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said today that international experts examining the debris in France had “conclusively confirmed†it was from the aircraft.
Flight MH370, a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 jet, disappeared in March 2014 with 239 people on board, after it reportedly veered off course from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
The plane is believed to have crashed into the southern Indian Ocean, but no evidence had been found despite a major search operation.
The wing washed up on the small island off the coast of Madagascar a week ago. Reunion Island is roughly 4,000 miles from the jet’s last confirmed location.
In his statement, Najib said:
It is with a very heavy heart that I must tell you that an international team of experts has conclusively confirmed that the aircraft debris is indeed MH370. We now have physical evidence that flight MH370 tragically ended in the southern Indian Ocean.
He added that he hoped the discovery “will at least bring certainty to the families†of the victims, saying the burden they had faced was “unspeakableâ€.
