Many voices raised as the Egyptian court sentences three Al Jazeera journalists for three years in prison, with two local journalists facing a lengthy retrial, while another Australian journalist, being sentenced in absentia, after being deported to his home country in February this year.
The accusations against the journalists were of being linked with a terrorist organization that has been outlawed in the country for working towards overthrowing of Egyptian President Mohammad Morsy in 2013. While journalists claim to be merely presenting the true side of the story, the trial is known to many as a heavily politicized one aimed at lowering any voice that goes against them.
While the court has still not issued the reasoning for its verdict, the journalists are accused of being non registered journalists, having in possession unlicensed equipment of broadcast and spreading of false news, endangering the national security of the country.

They are victims of vaguely worded and arbitrary state-secret laws that are used against activists as part of the authorities’ attack on freedom of expression

They are prisoners of conscience, solely imprisoned for challenging the views of the government. They should be released immediately and unconditionally.
